Was Valerie Plame outed to discredit her husband, or to...
undermine the covert operations she was involved in?

Discuss...

I want to know more about what her CIA operations were. Does anyone have any links?

1. Yes ...

"Such a leak could have had two aims. First, it would punish the Wilsons by blowing her cover and thus jeopardising her career. Second, it would warn others doing CIA work not to speak out publicly against the White House."

5. I doubt the RW would spin the outing of Valerie Plame
as a cover up on her WMD work. That would lead them down paths they don't want to go down.

8. Right.
It's silly to call this "right wing spin."

4. I think it was also to undermine the covert ops she was involved in
She worked in WMD - I'm not sure of the capacity. But there is a bigger story here, I'm sure of it.

Wish I had some links as well. I just know what I've read in Wilsons book.

10. Here's one that might help connect some dots...........
I think the RW spin machine wants to keep the story focused on this being a matter of political revenge. We know that Wilson undermined the case to invade Iraq, but I think there's a deeper, more evil story that needs to be exposed:

6. both undoubtedly
she'd have been all over Carlyle's involvement in arms dealing and the bushgang's criminal dealings with embargoed "terrorist" states.

11. "bushgang's criminal dealings with embargoed "terrorist" states"
I followed the Plame threads awhile back, and that's what made the most sense to me. Since she was working on WMD proliferation, I think someone had a lot to lose if she continued that work.

My bet would be that POS Cheney. I think he's doing some WMD proliferation on the side. Wherever there's money to be made....

14. even if their illegal dealings are just with conventional weapons,
that would come to light in any anti-WMD investigation

13. Yeah, call me paranoid...
but whenever the news is focused on one thing for a long time (Rove outing Plame to get back at Wilson), I start to wonder what are we missing?

I question whether Wilson's op-ed was that damaging to the Iraq war case to warrant Rove talking to the reporter for retaliation? I mean, I don't think most people had ever read it or heard about Wilson's piece at the time.

And giving Valerie was a covert CIA operative in WMD... And her cover company was tied to Saudi oil... I would like to know more about this part that is not receiving much attention.

9. Actually, there was a third reason.
Impuning Joe Wilson's credibility, and disrupting the research on WMD's were surely both reasons, but both were supporting the PNAC intent to justify the attack in Iraq! That was the primary reason to get these people out of the picture.

The outing of Plame was the easiest way to undermine the investigation of WMD. If they tried to halt the CIA from the top down, too many eyes would have been turned in tha direction. In fact, many a time before, they had turned the CIA away from reporting the facts on WMD - witness the SOTU address * delivered even after some in the CIA objected.

I figure Plame was about to expose someone in the WH who had his fingers in black market selling of WMD, and the WH had been successful to that point of keeping the facts from the light. Along came Plame and her WMD operation and the only way to end her was to expose her. The exposing was done in such a way that they thought they could wiggle out from it, and they almost have. Almost.

Really, why would rover out a CIA agent, knowing he'd catch a ton of heat? He only did it to keep a hundred tons of heat from coming down.

On edit: Here is a link to a DU post from Octafish with some background on this theory.
