I would have gone nuts had there been an Internet....
...during Watergate.

The ups and downs were tough. One day we were certain that Nixon was going down, the next day we were sick that he was getting away with it.

Ups and downs. Spin and counter-spin. Lies, revelations, more lies. It takes time and we'll all get hypertension and a severe case of the creeps if we hook all our hopes on the minutiae of each days's reports.

1. I would have flunked out
of school. Yes, it was terrible and frustrating thinking that they were going to get away with it all but I would have been here then too getting all upset. I think I am lucky to at least still believe no matter what that we will get this done. It drives my husband crazy but as I told him, I HAVE to have that underlying belief or I would have lost my mind years ago.

Peace. We will get this done.

2. I would have "gone nuts"
if I didn't have a computer since 2002..it was leading that way with the media being the way it is now.

That's why I got a computer..to find this place.

During Watergate there was real reporting.

4. I went to Journalism School because of Watergate!
Woodward (sigh!... what a washout!...) & Bernstein (still a hero) were my role models. Journalism school was a competitive nightmare back in the 70's because of them. All I can say, is what happened? I know I sold out--I joined an ad agency. Others of my ideological ilk must have sold out too or we wouldn't have the problems we have today. All I know is that it was next to impossible to get into a journalism school in the 70's and now it's next to impossible to find a journalist! Go figure!

8. Fellow sellout, here!

I was fascinated by the Watergate coverage, but the arguments weren't anywhere near as hateful as they are now.
Now, as you said, there are precious few journalists. And while the net has almost replaced MSM for real information, there's just so much info being put out there from so many sources, it's more difficult to put all of the pieces together. That's the job of an honest journalist.
Not saying I'm lazy, just too busy doing my own job to take on someone else's.

edit to add: Welcome to DU!

9. Thanks, guys!
Actually I've been here for a long time (lurking). I finally registered after the disastrous election in November when I couldn't keep it in any longer and then it took awhile to get the courage to post. (It's my old journalism training--have 3+ sources for your facts before you present them....) I've got my gut and so far it hasn't let me down, but I rarely have three outside reputable sources before I can state a "fact". So, I'm "shy". But, you know what? I'm old now and my "gut" has never let me down...so I may get bolder. I do come to the internet first every day to get my news and that's a real "cut" to journalists. I don't trust the media anymore. It's very sad.

5. You're right, sort of. I think the internet and the bloggers
especially, have forced the MSM off their lazy a**es this time! I've gotta tell ya, I'd be LOST without the internet NOW and my access to DU!

10. imagine, if you'd had a 'home' computer in the early 70's
you'd need an addition to put it in if it was capable of operating like today's, most likely.
Bill Gates once stated that the most anyone would need for a hard drive was something like 1-2 mbs...

Online since 96, some days i pine for the days of Pine, and telnet...today's equivalent of string and 2 cans.

old, not dead, and maybe in the way.
