Should This be Bothersome?
I just found out that a student council election at a local elementary school was rigged. At least to this extent: one of the candidates who the teachers deemed to have exhibited some bad behavior recently, didn't have her votes counted.

I would ask, what does this teach the children? Except that the children will never know so they're not going to learn anything. It says more about the adults I think, but then again, it is only student council.

Should I just consider this a valid effort by adults to control the school setting, or is it a troublesome sign of the times?

3. I would be outraged
I understand that a holding a position like this in school is a privilage. Student Council's don't actually do anything. They are foder to make popular students look good. However, if you are calling it an election then it should be an election. If someone is being removed from eligability then state that. Don't tell people that they can vote for this kid and then ignore the votes.

They're raising a bunch of republicans who are going to think it's okay to not count votes.

4. I agree.
But I will also add that those who decided not to count her votes are being short sighted.

Bad behavior is often a call for attention. Winning a popularity contest with the pseudo responsibility of a council possition might help the student improve.

They should have left it alone if they didn't disqualify the student.

5. It prepares them for the way real world elections work

Including the part about not telling the students.

They will know that her votes weren't counted, and they will know this was done in secret.

So when they are old enough to vote in elections, they will have a head start understanding the process!
