and there are people waiting in the wings to pounce as soon as they see a safe opening. Andrea Mitchell made this observation a few days ago when discussing the photos/videos of GWB and Rove together. She said this was a way of telling people to "backoff".

Did you see MTP yesterday with Woodward and Bernstein? Bernstein had said that Deepthroat kept pushing to look at things "in context", not the individual events. That the 'context' was people would do anything to protect the President. That's how all of this should be looked at as well, IMO.
