President Bush Holds Press Conference Following the G8 Summit

Q Given -- given recent developments in the CIA leak case, particularly Vice President Cheney's discussions with the investigators, do you still stand by what you said several months ago, a suggestion that it might be difficult to identify anybody who leaked the agent's name?

THE PRESIDENT: That's up to --

Q And, and, do you stand by your pledge to fire anyone found to have done so?

THE PRESIDENT: Yes. And that's up to the U.S. Attorney to find the facts.

Q My final point would be -- or question would be, has Vice President Cheney assured you --

THE PRESIDENT: It's up to the --

Q -- subsequent to his conversations with them, that nobody --

THE PRESIDENT: I haven't talked to the Vice President about this matter, and I suggest -- recently -- and I suggest you talk to the U.S. Attorney about that.

7. True, but that's not why I posted this

This morning, Bush said that he would fire anybody convicted of a crime in the Plame leak. He has said that in the past as well. Mr. McClellan in the past has used the broader language.

On some online boards that are open to those of any political slant, this is one of the Bush boosters' talking points: He only said he'd fire somebody who committed a crime. It's pretty lame, I agree.

The point is moot. Bush here said he would simply fire anybody who leaked, whether it was a criminal act or not, and leaves it to the US attorney, Mr. Fitzgerald. Thus, if one wants to be technical, based on what Mr. Bush said here, if Mr. Fitzgerald determines that Rove and/or Libby leaked information about Valerie Plame's identity as an agent to the press, Mr. Bush should fire them, regardless of whether or not indictments are handed down.

What Mr. Bush did this morning is move the goal posts.

Keep this kicked and please nominate it.

2. Here's more evidence

"I haven't talked to the Vice President about this matter..."

It's hard for me to believe that he hadn't talked to Cheney at that point ( I mean he sees him almost every day ) - so if we can assume he is lying, why would he say that he hadn't talked to Cheney? Some more plausible deniability? This obviously is a conspiracy that goes straight to the top of the administration!

Exactly. It is entirely possible that he didn't talk to Cheney for exactly that reason.

He could be lying about not talking to Cheney, but you'll never prove it. No White House occupant will ever again be foolish enough to record his conversations.

He said - RECENTLY - he often misspeaks (continually/habitually/incessantly..... lol) - and frequently starts another part of a sentence and goes back to finish the previous sentence then comes back to what he was saying next...

So what he was essentially saying was "I haven't talked to the Vice President about this matter -- recently -- and I suggest you talk to the U.S. Attorney about that."
