Nation's Governors Warn That New Rules for Driver's Licenses Will Cause Costs to Skyrocket

"DES MOINES, Iowa Jul 18, 2005 — In the name of homeland security, motorists are going to see costs skyrocket for driver's licenses and motor vehicle offices forced to operate like local branches of the FBI, the nation's governors warn.

The new federal law squeezed this spring into an $82 billion spending bill had Republican and Democrat governors fuming at their summer conference, with several bringing their complaints to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff at a Monday meeting.

"It's outrageous to pass this off on the states," said Republican Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, incoming chairman of the National Governors Association. "You're essentially asking the front-line clerks at the DMV to become an INS agent and a law enforcement agent."

Chertoff assured governors his agency will work with them to design a driver's license system that is efficient for consumers and more secure. He said it is an opportunity to strengthen safeguards against identity theft as well as terrorism. "

3. It costs too much ...

Yeah, that's the biggest problem with it. :eyes:

I want to be sympathetic, but I'm finding it hard to be so. Where were these governors when this was being rammed through Congress? Did even once speak up?

The comments about forcing a front-line clerk at the DMV to become an INS agent are also more than a little hypocritical. This kind of duty (forcing a clerk to become effectively a law enforcement agent else risk jail time) has long been foisted on people working in convenience stores. Most jurisdictions these days won't even assist employees in apprehending shoplifters or gasoline thieves, writing off the crimes as too difficult to prosecute and saying it is up to the owners of these businesses to put into place measures to prevent the crimes.

So, anyway, whatever.

4. I'm missing the point here.
I'm 61. I moved to Ga in 2000 and applied for a DL transfer from Pa.

I had to produce my birth certificate to the GA DMV. They didn't like my 61 year old birth certificate because it didn't have the State seal on it, so I had to order a new one from Pa to make them happy!

I have no idea how long they've been doing that here in Ga., but how does that differ from what Chertoff is asking all states to do? It doesn't seem to be causeing any major problems here, and my license is $10 for 4 years if I sign up for organ donation. so the cost is prohibitive. What's the problem????

5. I think you have to produce 3 forms of ID,
birth cert, photo ID (maybe old DL?), and a bill or something that proves your address with your name on it.

Could be wrong on this, but it's what I remember about the new national ID cards......which is exactly what these DL's will be. You knew they'd get them one way or another, didn't you?

7. But why would the cost go up?
As I said, they already do this in Ga. and the cost is less than yours! Surely, no matter where you get a DL, you have to provide SOME kind of ID, right?

9. Ummm, maybe not! Remembe all poltics is local?
The same guys you're talking about have to stand for re-election. Raise the DL costs by more than a few dollars, and they're history and they know it!

Don't have such a defeatest attitude.! They can't get away with anything that you don't let them get away with!!!!
