Kerry will call for Senate hearings on Rove this week.
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 01:13 PM by blm
From Kerry's email:

How many more times will Karl Rove make President Bush eat his words and shred his credibility before Karl Rove does the honorable thing and leaves the White House?

Yesterday the President furiously backpedaled from his promise to fire anyone involved in leaking the identity of a covert CIA agent to the press. Now that it's known that Rove and Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff Lewis Libby were involved, the President has lowered the bar and now says he'll only fire someone who is convicted of a crime.

President Bush is setting a terrible standard of leadership in the White House by protecting insubordinate aides who refused to come forward when the President demanded to know who in his administration leaked Valerie Plame's identity -- and he's sending a disturbing message about our national security.

The President should not wait to find out whether Rove is convicted in the end for his leak. Either Rove lied to the President about this matter of national security, which means he should be fired immediately, or the President is not being straight with the American people about his own involvement in this case.

With all the dissembling coming out of the White House, it's clear that the only way the American people can get to the bottom of this is through full Congressional hearings. I will call for hearings this week -- and you can strengthen this call by adding your name to our petition today:

http://www.johnkerry.com/firerove

With both the House and Senate in Republican hands it will be difficult to force Congressional hearings on the Bush White House. Having as many statements as possible from people in every state will help my colleagues and me show that this is what America wants. According to a poll released yesterday by ABC News, 75% of Americans believe that Karl Rove should be fired if he leaked classified information.

More than 300,000 people have signed on so far -- help us double our numbers by forwarding this email to your friends asking them to sign:

45. I am quite happy to hear that *you* have a project underway
I give you all of the credit for getting the DSM into the media. It was stalled in the internets until your work got CSPAN to stop denying the validity of the DSMs and they then began to cover it. From there the story broke.

8. He followed through on DSM. Urge your senators to get on board with the
task to FINISH the investigation into Iraq intel that was only half completed by the Intel Committee and point to DSM as key evidence in that case, as per Kerry's DSM letter to the committee.

15. We have urged our Senators to sign. We want Kerry to publically urge them.
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 02:54 PM by Dr Fate
The only reason we even know Kerry wrote a letter is because we read it on DU.

At the least he could have urged people to contact Senators in one of his emails, like he does with other issues.

No wonder no one besides internet Liberals are calling their Senators to ask them to support the DSM investigation- no one will go on TV and talk about it, so no one KNOWS about it.

I hope this new carrot he is dangling to the base involves more than a letter that no one will hear about.

I guess I'll stop trying to call my Senators. It won't do any good without publicity. I'll just sit here and beat my tits about something I can't control, instead of doing something about something I can control.

32. heh.....you may not know this, LC....
but, Doc pushes his point as a serious Dem activist. He really means it for the betterment of the party. Not unlike the way we hammer on certain matters...consistently tenacious. I'm like that about the media, for instance, repetitive to make sure the point is never lost.

Doc really just wants all our Dems to come out fighting every step of the way, because HE does. His record of being a stand up Dem goes back a long way on this board.

You're both great warriors in my book.

but.....there are people who pull that crap to drag Kerry through the mud, and then there is Doc, who would be among the first to stand by Kerry's side against a GOP onslaught.

Those of us who've been at this forum a few years have a strong impression of a very earnest Democrat.

My guess....you two will end up battling as buddies.....you're too much alike not to be....both of you are very earnest and loyal. Andy and I did that for over a year. We battled and smooched as a matter of course.

6. Rove hearings in the Senate. DSM hearing in the House.
Evidence of additional war crimes on Friday (along with confirmation of Rummy's approval). Possible criminal indictments.

Are the walls moving in on these awful creatures?

Ideally, indictments would come out. Then, impeachment hearing or a resignation.

10. Why Friday?
I'm confused why we want to hit the weekend news cycle instead of the Monday news cycle? Is there something about the Sunday shows that makes this preferable?

It just seems Friday is a poor choice, you know, water cooler talk and all?

11. It's tricky. You want it to be fresh for weekend political shows, but, you
can't determine what they're going to pick up these days.

It's not like the past where you could count on the important stories getting coverage. Now it's more like - how are they going to cover up the important stories so they can keep protecting Bush.

14. Kerry could go directly on the interview & debate shows and discuss it.
Then they would have to at least show him talking about it, unless they actually censor soundbytes he says.

I agree that Friday is the worse day to "release" information.

17. I've thought about this, Doc, and I think there is a reason why Kerry is
urging through behind the scenes more than in front of cameras, and why he probably wishes that other senators would take up the slack....

No secret that many in the intel community lined up behind Kerry last year. They really expected him to take office (they should've spent time exposing the voting machines). They assumed all of the important info would come out after Kerry took office, because they knew he tried to get plenty reBCCI declassified for public consumption and was fought bitterly. But, they know his track record is to get as much out as possible to the public.

After the election, Bush had Goss purge those agents suspected of supporting Kerry.

In January, Kerry went to England to meet with his counterparts and allies there to discuss a stronger opposition front. I think they came up with a roundabout way to get the info out.....leak the DSM and other memos to one credible journalist.

The memos were given to the reporter in lat April, published in early May. Kerry waits for press to take them up....and waits...and waits....and then finally insults the media into looking more closely at the minutes.

Yes, he's done more than any other senator, but, I don't think he wants to be the one out in the front banging the drums, because I think he was part of the original decision in England to leak the memos.

I don't believe in coincidences or that everything is happening in a vacuum. I think the intel plan to defeat the BFEE is still operating and that key players aren't always going to be the ones in front of the cameras.

18. Kerry's letter raises talk of BUSH's INVOLVEMENT!
I think this is significant language since the corporate media hasn't event raised the possibility that Bush's closest advisor might have discussed this illegal act with him.

""The president should not wait to find out whether Rove is convicted in the end for his leak. Either Rove lied to the president about this matter of national security, which means he should be fired immediately, or the president is not being straight with the American people about his own involvement,"

have been aligned for a few years and it's a good bet that Kerry knows what Wilson knows, including what is yet to be revealed to the public.

You could start a thread on this bit of info, since few have picked up on its significance. I think most people only glance at statements instead of reading them through and miss important points.

25. I'm hopeful for a future Senate debate: "Rove, firing squad or hanging?"
I have been spitting nails over this treason thing for 2 years now, and considering the conversation I had with a Republican friend this morning, the concept of traitors in the White House is making a lot of people angry on both sides of the aisle.

I told her about the bill to strip Rove of security clearance, how the vote was split right down party lines. I said we have our theme for the 2006 election: Republicans, soft on treason. She thought it was a great idea.

BTW, you can guess that she voted for Kerry :)

My note on the petition: Fire Rove? That's too good for him. I suggest the firing squad, considering that he's a traitor. But then, I'm just someone who respects those who are putting their lives on the line to protect us, and I believe that when they are betrayed, it is the most insidious of betrayals because it affects us all.
