Is it POSSIBLE that Chimp has outfoxed himself on the SCOTUS nomination?
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 03:55 PM by Rosco T.
From everything I see, the name being bantied about is really an "O'Conner Clone".. no real paper trail, that that there is pretty much middle of the road, has already gone on record 'supporting' Roe...

If Chimpy thinks this is going to 'deflect' the story off Rove..

what is (stay with me)... what if...

The Dem's say "she's a fine nominee, we see no problem with her".

WHAM! No controversy.. no fights... (till confirmation hearings)

No Deflection from Rove... it stays on the news....

What do you think, sirs?

1. No trail, yes; moderate, nope.
There's the problem. She's a member of the federalist society, has dissented on the basis of limiting reach of the commerce clause (thats a radical federalist position). It will turn out she is not another O'Connor, is the thing. But it will still be hard to oppose her, because there is very little, or nothing, on record to base the opposition on.

7. That's my point...
.. if the Dems are SMART, they will just smile and say "well, she looks good" and nothing more TILL THE HEARINGS ACTUALLY START. That will be at least another week or two(???) and then they can start the opposition...

but for now, smile, and let the 'thugs spew and sputter with nothing to deflect against...

... and Rove stays in the news.

16. Yeah, but we'll have a right winger on the court for 30 years.
Whereas Bush will only be there for another 3, Rove-gate or not. And besides, rovegate will heat up again and become incandescent when Fitszgerald issues indictments.

So I wouldn't lie down for the Supreme Court nominee.

You are advocating a "Florida Flop," you know. Back around 1970, Steve Spurrier was just a few yards short of a passing record, the Gators were playing Miami and were well ahead, but Miami had the ball and could have run out the clock. So Florida's defense just laid down after the snap and let them score, so the Gators could get the ball back and go on the opffensive. It might have been Reaves, if not Spurrier. But its a true story.

21. Yes, why worry about it.
Keep them all afloat... opposing extremist judges, Rovegate, DSM, leaking of Naaem Noor Khan (yet to hit M$M), Where's Osama?, etc.... in sporadic bursts, emphasizing patterns of behavior.

2. Do you think he was negotiating with himselg again?
Strange things happen when he does that. No telling what might happen.

3. Could happen.
Bush the Elder brought us Souter, who is hardly a conservative's wet dream.

For my money, though, I want to see a long, drawn out fight. It will keep the Senate busy. And, thus, prevent the Congress from doing anything else hideous for quite a while. Think Social Security, immigration, etc. If they don't have their hands full, they could actually do something. And that would be bad.

4. I think I agree
IF she is indeed another Connor, then it's a sign that Bush feels he is too weak to try to pander to his fundy base.

Fundies will be up-in-arms, the Dems will -- as you say -- acquiesce, and then the heat will be back on Bush. Rovegate from the left, Fundies' indignation from the Right.

8. It's a possibility, but I'm worried that the MSM is wrong.
Shrub doesn't like his stuff known in advance. The MSM has been bantying Clement's name around all day! If I were Shrub's advisor, I would have said, let's put out this name and make the MSM think they have a real scoop, then at 9 O'Clock, knock 'em on their asses with a surprise! I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not convinced he's gonna screw his RW fundy supporters with her!

11. Point taken...

(gasp) "he lied to us??"

15. They won't care! But the MSM WILL!
They're already pissed at Shrub for having McClelland lie to them in the Press conferences, and switching his position on what would make him fire someone in the Admin.

If they are all jumping on Clement because of a leak, life is not going to be fun in the Press Room for a long time!

I think they might have gotten their info from just watching the WH. Shrub said something today about having a short list and wanting a face to face with the last candidates. Later in the day, CNN reported that Clement was here in Washington.

14. Are you saying the bush* admin would LEAK a SCOTUS appointee's
name? Shame on you! Don't you know if it came from the WH the leak would have been "Mr Clement's Wife is our choice"?

C'mon get with the program.

10. That sounds pretty ack-rat.
No matter what the Dems' reply will be, a SCOTUS appointment will deflect some attention from Turdgate. In this case, though, not so much.

Now watch Chimpy tell us that he's naming Frist, tonight...

23. Eh. Asscroft dies soon. that'd be fine with me.
And roy moore, well, I do think the Dems would filibuster that successfully. He's everyone's stereotype of a really stupid Southerner.

(No offense to any of the decent good-ol'-boys out there reading this.)

13. Could work out that way
but I don't think that the liberal support groups will let it.

I think they are ready and willing to trash anyone Bush nominates as long as they are breathing, if fact I think the GOP game plan is counting on this.

This could be smart politics for Bush for the following:

A. The right is already going some what crazy about this choice (if it turns out to be who is speculated) and that will make her look even more moderate to the public and therefore harder to attach.

B. By announcing this one in a PM talk he takes it off the evening news and the almost certain Democrat (read Kennedy) reaction. Also he reaches more people than he would with a mid morning/afternoon announcement, and he can partially control the initial spin.

C. He will probably have his support groups primed and ready to go since I believe he will let them know who it is early enough for them to prepare today. The left groups will have to react upon his naming his choice, advantage GOP.

D. He has a louder echo chamber thanks to RW radio and we all know it, AAR is fine but it and liberal type radio still lack the reach of conservatives, and it will be subject number 1 tomorrow. The tv nets will go with it but more people listen to radio during the day then have access to TV>

E. It will get the Rove story off the front page for at least the rest of the week (it was already showing signs of fading today) baring another development.

These guys play for keeps and I am not at all convinced this is a bad strategic move by Bush.

17. Welcome Her With Open Arms
Make Bush think he has picked your own first choice.

The result is that the rest of the Republican Party will then think Bush has fucked up again and chosen someone far to liberal. She must be if the Liberals have no objection to her.

The Bush boy will have fucked up again.

Oh, for whatever its worth I don't think I'd have any problem in simultaneously deploring his Supreme Court Nominee and continuing with my demands for his immediate impeachment. Multitasking, people do it ever day.
