1. Could be
I can't imagine him appointing another white male--but he will probably appoint some far right latino, is my guess.

2. Better not
That would have to go to the mat (filibuster).

4. They should go to the mat for this one
Rhenquist already is an arch conservatve, more so than O'Connell. Her replacement makes more of a differnce.

5. Regarding CJSC replacements...
It is my understanding that, usually, the President does not appoint a full replacement for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Rather, one of the sitting Justices is named to the position, with the Senate ratifying the appointment. Then a new Justice is named to the resulting vacancy.

7. My point is...
Whether naming someone to O`Conner's vacancy, or naming someone to a vacancy created because Rehnquist retired and a sitting Justice (Scalia? /shudder/) was promoted to CJ, the situation is identical. I don't see how "saving a nominee until the Chief Justice retires" makes any difference. Unless you mean to say that she's second on the list and will get the next vacancy, whoever it may be.

8. Second on the list. I am feeling like there are people saying "phew at
least it wasn't her" only to find out on the next go-round that it will be her.
