No woman to replace O'Conner? WTF?!
How can this be seen as anything but a step back for women's rights? Issues that concern women will now be decided by a court that has one token woman again.

I'm not surprised. The Bush administration closed the White House Women’s Initiatives and Outreach office in 2001. Clinton created the office in 1995 as a liaison between the President and women’s rights organizations, notifying women’s rights groups of upcoming legislation affecting women, communicating women’s concerns and proposals to the President, and scheduling meetings for women’s rights organizations with White House officials.

This macho cabal and the male dominated media will likely dismiss this but I believe the selection of yet another white man to the court represents a step back and an insult to our nation's women.

3. I'd rather have no woman than a conservative one...
I don't think having a right-wing psycho woman on the court who won't stand up for women's rights is a good example for our daughters (or sons). If there's a woman up there I want one who'll actually fight for me.

to mount a good fight. I think we settle because we know the history of our own opposition party in the Senate and their tendency to roll over.

But I get your point. I wanted a minority selection to replace Justice Marshall and got a lap dog conservative. And, I even made myself believe we could defeat Thomas at the time.

Still, I would have more confidence that a female justice would approach cases with the sensitivity and insight that O'Conner sometimes exibited on issues that primarily concerned women than I would from yet another man who has been in the conservative's pocket from day one.

edit: thanks for keeping me focused and grounded on this.

try to take our right to vote away next.

The chimp has lost it! The chimp nominated a right wing, para-military gun, womb raiding nut! Oh well, we got to bust him up in the hearings.

14. I want to think that women would step out in force and oppose this choice
and influence the Senate to knock this man down. But, then you'd have to have a receptive Senate . . .

19. And women have to understand what's going on. And I bet most won't.
The repubs have been after women's rights for 25 years, and half the women are still voting for these idiots.

16. I think that's Goonzales' unless women fight for representation
Of coures, issues matter also. Where these nominees stand matters. Bush could concievably pick a male who would be excellent for women's issues and concerns, but he won't.

It is the function of our opposition to force issues. I think the refusal of Bush to nominate a women in this instance should be put to him without giving him any benefit of doubt because of some future opportunity to do the right thing.

There's no Affirmative Action for SCOTUS and besides, Edith Jones would have been a true disaster. I still think we dodged a bullet.
