Fla. Boy, 8 Charged With Aggravated Manslaughter In Sister's Death

TAMPA, Fla. -- Prosecutors charged an 8-year-old boy Tuesday with aggravated manslaughter in the beating death of his 7-month-old half sister, but decided to keep the case in juvenile court.

If convicted of the May 22 attack on Jayza Laney Simms, the boy - whose name has not been released by authorities - could be kept in custody in a juvenile facility until he turns 21, said state attorney's office spokeswoman Pam Bondi.

"We thought that the juvenile system was the place for him where he can get the help he needs," Bondi said.

Police said the boy kicked and punched Jayza and hit her in the face with a 2-by-4.
