Hey guys, NEWSFLASH, the Senate hasn't investigated Roberts yet
I think that Chuck Schummer put it perfectly at the press conference...

He said (paraphrasing): We told the President what a consensus versus a non consensus nominee would be. This guy is somewhere in the middle. We'll have to look into him.

For all we know, this guy could molest children and kill puppies in his free time. For all we know, he could be a closet homosexual who secretly meets with gay rights groups.

I know, I know, he was already confirmed to the appeals court, but at the time he wasn't a controversial nominee for that job, they probably weren't trying to dig up dirt on him.

And god knows the White House vetting process is flawed. Do I even need to remind everybody about John Bolton, let alone Bernie Kerik.

This guy has a very slim record of judicial opinions, which means that his background will be more important.

So why don't we all take a deep breath and at least wait 24 hours before we start screaming "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT" or "DON'T FIGHT, DON'T FIGHT, DON'T FIGHT"

1. Good idea
Mr. Schumer is one of my favorite's and he's been doing a lot of leading lately. :) I agree with him. I'm willing to learn more information about him before "jumping the gun" so to speak. I thought for sure it would've been Brown. I've never heard of this guy before.

2. And at least, pick the fight
He's just another corrupt Bush crony. That'll be easier to argue than abortion fight #3,299. And I'm an abortion on demand person saying that.

7. Corruption is important.
This would also fall in nicely with the "Culture of Corruption" thing that the DNC has been pushing.

It might be a better focus than the guy's questionable and apparently rather nebulous views on abortion.

5. What?
I know you're not equating, "For all we know, this guy could molest children and kill puppies in his free time" with, "For all we know, he could be a closet homosexual who secretly meets with gay rights groups."

So what if he was a closet homosexual who secretly meets with gay rights groups? That's a positive in my book.

8. I think the OP was trying to state it as a positive.
The point was this guy could be a total monster or he might not be that bad. It'll take the Senate hearings to dig up all the relevant info.

9. Yea I meant that would be a positive if he were
This guy could secretly be pro gay rights and pro choice. Do I think it's likely, eh not really. But as I said, this administration SUCKS at vetting their nominees.

6. Well, those of us saying "don't fight" are not exactly saying that
We are saying don't fight NOW because we have bigger fish to fry. The hearings won't be until September. If info surfaces by then there will be plenty of time to fight. In the meantime, let's not take our eyes off the ball. It is a long season.

10. Two Small Points...
Roberts went through a FBI background check in 03 before he went on the DC appelate court

and

he was vetted by the senate at the same time...

12. Yes for the appeals court, where he met little opposition
If there was little opposition, then there was little investigation. Let Leahy, Schummer, Durbin, Feingold, and Kennedy do their job and get the dirt on this guy. Very few people in politics are squeaky clean, especially Republicans.

Look, realistically, I think that this is going to be a battle. But, we don't need to be suiting up for this one just yet. Remember that 60+% favor Roe v Wade and one of the people on the judiciary committee is going to ask him to give a straight answer on this. If he doesn't give a straight answer, we can block him saying that he won't answer questions (which is what he did last time he was before a senate panel). If he does give a straight answer, then I predict either a fillibuster or a very close confirmaion vote. Then of course, the nuclear option will come up. The end result of this is that the religious wrong will be appeased but not overjoyed (they wanted somebody like Roy Moore). The rest of the country will be pissed either way.

11. Thank you!
Now, could someone photoshop a really juicy picture of roberts?

Joking! But, the investigation hasn't started yet. Let's wait & see & do research. If nothing else maybe we can kill him or at least wound him with a 1000 papercuts.

best

13. But part of the process is us asking the media and the Senate questions
If we wait until the actual committee meetings to research and question - - and oppose - - he will be confirmed. Because the right is not sitting around waiting to see if he's worthy of fighting for before they start writing their LTTE and calling their Senators and posting on political discussion boards.

It is our jobs as citizens to speak up now, if we oppose him now.
