bumps ahead for bush* - SCOTUS nomination timing
it's pretty much a given the timing of the nomination was designed to knock ROVE off of the headlines - and it appears to have done that

but there are some bumps ahead:

Congress goes on August recess - so not much is going to be done in moving this nomination along. It does give dems and repugs time to "frame" their arguments without going on an official congressional record.

bush* also wants Roberts confirmed by October. this essentially leaves just one month for "official hearings", debate and voting. Not enough time to adequately investigate and have REAL hearings.

Roberts is just enough of an unknown to the public that a filibuster won't fly - it will appear that the dems are whining and obstructing.

best thing the dems can do is to point out that one month is not enough time for consideration of a nominee that would impact the course of the country for years - and to rush him though with wink, nod and a rubberstamp does the country a great disservice

1. He was unanimously confirmed 2 yrs ago . . .
when he was appointed to the DC Circuit Ct. of Appeals. For the Dems to now do a complete turn-around will look absolutely ridiculous.

Putting his ideologies aside (of course we will not share those), the guy is certainly qualified to sit on the Court. Unless some skeleton falls out of a closet within the next few months, this guy should get a pass, as there doesn't appear to be any good-faith justification to go to war over him.

2. Indictments on the Plame outing may slow things down...
If the Plame situation really blows up, and it may well, the Roberts hearings and confirmation will not speed through.

One thing for sure, Bush had some really, really bad choices on his short list. Hopefully we will find out more about this guy.
