Another Idiot * Voter Now Begging Him For Help

Truly, what the hell is wrong with these people? :eyes:

They voted for him because of his moral values, and they are losing their state health care!

Sometimes I just have to shake my head at people like this.

Maybe you should have listened when John Kerry said that good affordable healthcare for all Americans IS a moral value.

I'm sorry you're sick, but it's your bed, you made it, enjoy lying in it.

103. I used to feel bad and do feel bad when
something like that happens. But if they voted for Bush and didn't listen to anything John Kerry said then I no longer feel that bad for someone. That's why people have to learn to vote smart. Having health care is a moral value worth having. I know that for sure (I don't have it either).

38. The US needs universal socialised health care.
You've never got it from a Repub, but then you've never got it from a Democrat either. Money=health is just wrong. There are people here whose political views I think are 'wrong' but I wouldn't want the UK to be a place where they couldn't afford to see a doctor. WTF - how can anyone be pleased that these people can't see a doctor because your healthcare system is so fucked?

Putting aside the irony of Wilma's vote, it is difficult to take pleasure in her misery. Unfortunately, our health care situation is just a symptom of the bigger "greed is good" corporatist stranglehold we're under.

162. I hope so.
I'm listening to Bill Clinton's autobiography. Love to hear them read in authors' voices. Makes being in my car much more intersting. I recommend it if you haven't done it.

Anyway, in listening to the section on health care reform I felt so angry. Those mean spirited self serving republicans in collusion with the media saw to it that we didn't have a universal healthcare plan. Even repubs like Dole who had an interest in that issue. Instead of working with the Clinton team to put together a plan they had it killed. Just couldn't allow Clinton to accomplish something so relevant to the country.

He talks about a Wall Street Journal (I think) aticle about health care reform research. When people were asked about plans they overwhelmingly supported the unidentified Clinton plan as what they most wanted, but when asked about specifically about the Clinton plan opposed it. That makes me so sad!

Job cuts were going gangbusters in pug's first term and his promised tax cuts never generated the 320,000 jobs a month he promised. Yet in so hard-hit states like Ohio, you would have thought the vote against Bush would have been like 99(Kerry)-1 (Bush). People voted for that dip anyway

just like this gal and her husband. How telling is this quote-

"We cannot afford to go to the dr., much less pay for our medications. I feel that my own government has let us down, while at the same time trying to support other countries, free other countries, etc. Why can't our State elected officials take a pay cut, or lose some of the perks paid for by tax payers, and keep poor people alive a while longer? What has gong wrong with our priorities? We say "Give us your poor your hungry" etc. What about our own poor and hungry? This is the first time in my 61 years of life I've been so angry and hurt by my own government. Please help us and the many others that are being forced to an early death because we are no longer productive.
Thank you for your time."
Wilma

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME??????? Wilma et al- haven't you figured it out yet?? This president has NO TIME for ANY of us. Simply put- he couldn't care less about you.

13. I'm sure the highly moralistic george bush will get right on this....
Wilma. :eyes: The fact is, Wilma, Republicans don't care if you live or die (ONCE you're out of the womb, that is). You voted for the wrong party, dearie, now you're paying the price. bush and his cronies are taking the money you depend on and are spending it on a bogus war and tax cuts for the rich. You DO support tax cuts for the rich, right Wilma? All that money will "trickle down" to you and your husband, just be patient. In the meantime, just try to hang on with no medical care or prescription drugs. We all have to do our part in the war on terror.
My question to you Wilma, why do you hate America? Your great leader wants you to sacrifice, and all you're doing is whining and complaining!
Should have voted for Democrats Wilma. You probably wouldn't be in the fix you're in today of you had. But you had to vote for the "highly moral" george bush. If allowing people in our country to die from lack of basic health care is "highly moral", I'd hate to see what low morals look like. I guess that would be like a President having a girlfriend. We can't have that now, can we? :eyes:

On the serious side, another Red-Stater with buyer's remorse. george bush couldn't give two shits about you and your husband, Wilma.

Just a little point: She doesn't have to vote for Democrats to get help from us, we just have to be in office. In fact most people who voted for Bush would probably be more than happy to switch sides if they saw some concrete help might result.

Fact the facts, the Republican machine has convinced an awful lot of americans that the Democratic Party has nothing to offer them. The perception exists, and for good reason, that the Democrats are the party of the city and its worthless poor. We are the bringers of the welfare state, the masters of regulation, godless heathens absorbed in our hedonistic lifestyles for whom the notion of work ethic, honor, and self reliance are anathama. Unless we banish that lie and start doing some concrete things for these natural constituents don't be a bit suprised at lost elections or even public acceptance of election fraud.

36. No, this woman is delusional and we need to write her off.
If we as Democrats waste our time actually fixing Bush's policy mistakes for "values voters" (sic) like Wilma, shame on us. Of course, she will gleefully accept relief from Democratic programs like Medicaid, general relief and Veterans Administration benefits, but in the end --and in the voting booth-- she will always, always, always vote for the "values" candidate as defined by the Right wing media machine.

She is self-righteous, censorious and, yes, hateful of other cultures, peoples and lifestyles. She can be easily controlled by her local theologists and RW radio. She is convinced that she WILL BURN IN HELL if she votes for a Democrat.

We cannot afford to waste one penny of our of our scarce message-resources on Wilma.

The good news is that Wilma only represents, at most, 22% of the voting public.

I'm also tired of apologizing for racism and bigotry and I'll call these people out when I see it. Wilma may not get it (yet) that if Bush were any kind of a moral leader, he would be focused on the needs of the world community and not carefully isolated from reality. But whether Wilma ever gets it or not, we need to push for the help that will mean so much to people like her. If we don't, our supposed values are hollow.

45. I don't think Dems have failed anybody. The DREs are at fault.
If the vote counting had been fair, Kerry would be in the WH after a comfortable victory of 3%-5 1/2%, somewhere in that range (according to the exit polls, the only true measure nowadays of the outcome of elections).

All Dems can do is vote in large numbers and express opinions, and the Dems did both in 04, in spades. The Dems in positions of authority who should have been screaming bloody murder about the fraud are at fault. If they don't give a damn about this democracy, then what can we do? The vote fraud is by now completely obvious to anybody who investigates it.

I really think the only thing that will wake the ignorant masses up is suffering. These things always work in cycles. A Democrat takes charge, starts cleaning house and putting things in order. It seems like Wilma is getting a healthy dose of compassionate conservatism if you ask me.

(and they sadly are popping up with greater frequency on congress.org, big surprise?), I do wonder how in the hell we are supposed to "reach" the Wilma-type voter. At this point, I am not so sure we even can.

Granted, "being an idiot or even a card carrying Repug doesn't make one deserve to get screwed by the system any more than anyone else." BUT people like Wilma follow their warped views of what's "moral" into supporting this Administration. They disparage our lack of "morals" when we support things like universal health care and assistance to disabled / elderly folks, or when we oppose actions by our Government to screw folks exactly like her. These people act according to their priorities, demonize those with different priorities, and then piss & moan when they get what they ask for. Fuck 'em.

101. That sounds a little like a Republican argument.
Not much of this is her own making. People are entitled to make mistakes. I find berating them for their "morals" is, in this case, morally problematic in itself.

115. Sheesh, not even sure where to start with that-
OK, so it sounds (to you) like a Republican argument. Sadly, it does to me, too. Pity Dems have yielded the whole "personal responsibility" thing, huh? But that aside, so what? Not all R arguments are devoid of logic, just as not all D arguments are unimpeachable. Fact is, actions -> consequences is a common thread in most cultures / religions, as it is in science. Call it "wages of sin", karma, or "an equal and opposite reaction." I stand by it.

But more specifically, how do you figure that "not much of this is of her own making"? She's obviously on The Internets, and information is available to anyone who bothers looking for it. There is no excuse for her to have allowed herself to be conned by GWB... assuming that she was conned, and not fully in support of his transparent actions.

Of course ppl are entitled to mistakes. I've certainly made my share, and will continue to do so. I won't, I hope, be willfully ignorant enough to continue to make the same ones, over and over. IF she has a pattern of supporting politicians based on her "moral" beliefs, and those politicians consistently screw her (and/or ppl like her), she has an obligation to learn from her mistakes. Her message to Bush clearly stated that she has not.

As for my morally problematic "berating them for their 'morals'... you've misread everything I've written. I'm "berating" (although I take issue w/that characterization; saying "search me for sympathy" doesn't meet the criteria, IMO) her for her
a) continuing to exercise poor judgement (voting "morals" over survival, in this case) in the face of overwhelming evidence against her position,
b) choosing ignorance, and
c) I'm making a broader accusation against ppl in general who don't mind their neighbors being fucked over - and in fact, attack those who would interrupt the fucking - but whine like Rush with an empty medicine cabinet, when karma bites them in the ass.

FWIW, as a smoker, I have no plans to sue RJR if I develop lung cancer. Flipside, I do hold 'em responsible for their sick practice of targeting kids.

As a pudge, I don't hold Mickey D's responsible.

As an American, I realize that "they hate us for our freedoms" is bullshit.

And while I have enormous sympathy for folks who find themselves against a wall, through circumstances OF, OR NOT OF, their own making, I have very little for the "little Eichmanns", as Ward Churchill recently put it.

From what I read, she's a little Eichmann. And my finite amount of compassion can be, IMO, better used elsewhere.

A pesron who only gets their information from the news networks or from their pastor could easily have been fooled. We all know how biased the media was during the election season aand how full of crap the lead3ership of the Christian Right is.

Of course, if Wilma decided gay marriage and abortion bans or killing Muslims and passing PATRIOT act II should be the nation's top priorities, then she has only herself to blame.

46. Dear Wilma,
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 08:30 AM by smoogatz
Thanks very much for sending me an email over the internets. I'm sorry to hear that you and your husband are having such difficult times. As you know, my job is hard work--and one of the hardest things about it is having to listen to the sob stories of sad sacks like yourself. It just wears me out sometimes; even more than clearing brush down on my ranch in Crawford, Texas. Down in Crawford, people believe in taking personal responsibility for their problems (unless you've got a few million to contribute to one of my campaigns like Ken Lay and the boys at Enron, in which case I'll do whatever it takes keep your ass out of prison--but that's another story). They also believe in the power of prayer. That's why I'm happy to refer you to one of our faith-based initiators, Billy Ray Kozlowski, who runs the Mega-Church of Christ in a Drive-In not far from you in Muskrat Haunch, Arkansas. Billy Ray and his entire congregation have agreed to pray for you and your husband for fifteen seconds next Sunday, at absolutley no charge to you (although I wouldn't get too used to those food stamps--they're probably gonna get cut off when the next round of tax cuts for my rich buddies goes into effect. Sorry!). I have absolute faith that Billy Ray and his Sunday pray-a-thon is the answer to all of your problems. If it doesn't work, it's probably because you or your husband is unworthy in the eyes of God. In closing, thanks for voting for me. I hope you'll vote for my brother Jeb when he runs in '08. His moral values are pretty much exactly the same as mine.

Lots of luck,

George W Bush

I understand the anger - really understand it, I've been in a rage since 2000 - but this letter is tragic on so many levels that I can't take any glee from it or a 'fuck you' attitude toward the writer.

When Wilma gets the 'reply' we know she'll get - nothing - the light will come on. Note that she writes, "This is the first time in my 61 years of life I've been so angry and hurt by my own government." Instead of heckling her for voting for Bush twice, we should think about how we can seize upon the anger of the 'morals voters' to bring them back where they belong - us.

I hardly think this woman is out of reach - she gets it. "Please help us and the many others that are being forced to an early death because we are no longer productive."

Personally, I don't want to see any American suffer, especially ones who have to support two adults on $769 a month and are getting what little safety net is out there removed. I don't care what party she belongs to - this problem of withdrawing health care from the poor is very real and we need to focus on this immorality like a laser beam. And remember some compassion, misguided as this woman has been.

60. If you think it's not her fault she's stupid, you might be a liberal.
But seriously. Working-class people have been thoroughly suckered by the right ever since the Reagan years. It's much easier for many Americans to believe that a politician would lie about a blow-job than about their whole agenda. The working class in this country has forgotten what Democrats, going back to FDR, have done for them. The great failure of the current incarnation of the Democratic party is that we've lost sight of that great progressive heritage, too.

65. actually...
I don't think she's stupid. She's clearly bright enough to make the connection between this very expensive, treasury-draining war and occupation and the loss of her state medical benefits. Whether or not she should have done so prior to voting for Bush again in 2004 is between her and her conscience, although her vote is helping to drag many innocent people down in her same situation. I know it's hard to get past that fact or to not be angry about it.

I completely agree with you regarding the failure of our Democratic leadership in dealing with what has really become the third rail of American politics - poverty. At least Edwards wasn't afraid to address the subject (and he still is addressing it).

I just had a great feeling of sadness reading that letter as she begged this elitist fat-cat for her very life and the life of her husband. I wonder if Wilma had come here and read this thread if she'd feel that Democrats have any better solutions for her, or if we're so divided as a country all we can do is hate her for her vote.

And those who vote repeatedly against their own economic self-interests because they believe all the "moral values" crap are classic evolutionary failures. But yes, what we learn here is that economic populism, framed correctly, is the winning platform for the next generation--which is how long it's going to take to sort out the wreckage after Bushco is through. That's what I love about Howard Dean--he's a true progressive who understands that economic populism should be the lens through which the Democratic party views itself. Bush is a religious populist, and has managed to use the weapon of his alleged faith very successfully. But I think the clock is running out on the fundie/corporate/neocon coalition.

No "glee" here, either. Just exhaustion and rising contempt for those who actively support the actions (and actors) which hurt them, while often heaping scorn (and worse) on those who try to help.

When Wilma gets the 'reply' we know she'll get - nothing - the light will come on.

I hardly think this woman is out of reach - she gets it. "Please help us and the many others that are being forced to an early death because we are no longer productive."

No it won't, and no she doesn't. Hell, reread the letter. The only specific "help" she's asking Bush for is some mechanism by which STATE Gov't officials remit part of their salaries and perks to fund TennCare, etc. Not for nothin, but TN Legislators make 16,500/yr. The Gov (in '01) made $85K. I don't think the pay cuts she wants would go as far as she'd like. Meanwhile, she is completely disregarding the role "her guys" in DC have been playing in screwing her, since they're so "moral". Think she'll believe it if you try to tell her that the Bush tax cuts, deficit spending, domestic cutbacks, etc., have ANYTHING to do with the hit states are taking. Shee-it, best you're likely to get is an offer to pray for your hellbound, Lie-beral soul.

Personally, I don't want to see anyone, American or not, suffer. You're right, but people like her don't see this as "immorality"- that word is reserved for same-sex marriage and the other issues which prompted her to support - and continue to support - her "moral" President. And as for compassion, I reserve mine for the many, many folks who are getting screwed, and aren't enabling the screwers.

69. I know...
And as for compassion, I reserve mine for the many, many folks who are getting screwed, and aren't enabling the screwers.

I can and do feel rage for the middle-class suburbanites with their yellow ribbon-stickered SUV's who voted for Bush, for the cowardly young Republicans who support his wars but won't fight in them, for corporate fat-cats and war profiteers who are sucking on the public teat while berating welfare reform for the proles, etc. etc.

I should feel enraged by this woman and scornful of her proposed solution. But still, you can feel her terror in every word and she's not bitching about gas prices - this is life and death stuff, even if she voted for her own death sentence. As angry as I am, I hope she gets the help she needs - and I know she won't.

72. Despite our differing views on some points of this issue,
particularly the culpability / fuckem angle, we're in complete agreement on your last couple sentences:

But still, you can feel her terror in every word and she's not bitching about gas prices - this is life and death stuff, even if she voted for her own death sentence. As angry as I am, I hope she gets the help she needs - and I know she won't.

I may not claim "compassion" for people like (i presume) her (to be), but I can still despise the wrongness and unnecessary helplessness of the circumstances she finds herself in.

94. There's a huge difference between mere ignorance...
and willful ignorance.

Mere ignorance is innocent, and it deserves sympathy. WILLFUL ignorance, as in the case of Wilma and so many others who absolutely REFUSE to look at the bare facts in front of them, deserves, in my opinion, no pity whatsoever.

We as a party really ought to find a way to tap into the growing misery and fear that is a direct result of the Bush administration, the Republican Senate, the Republican House, a judiciary heavily weighted toward conservative Republicans, and the Rovian Wurlizer of Republican-supporting major media.

Wilma, you ought have figured it out already, this is increasingly a Republican world and it disgusts and repells many of us. Join us in our fight for our own peace, our own share of prosperity, our own American Dream.

Many here have been hurt by Bush, neocons, and libertarians. I can't get a job unless I graduated from WKU instead of EMU (can't afford that), move to India, or turn to Jesus. It sucks ass. Wilma may wake up but more needs to be done. Ohio has already removed it's disability coverage. 100% gone. More people suffer and die, people will wake up. Most of these people have so much hate for liberals, thanks to Rove, they will need old fashioned pain to see that Republicans only care for the wealthy. Sorry, Wilma, but vote for your interests, not the interests of billionaires.

that's how much your leaders care about you Wilma. You are useless to the state so you get to die. I notice she just wants her state officials to take a pay cut. how about Dick Cheney giving up his Haliburton pension. 73. I've read Wilma's letter and I'm torn.
Obviously part of me feels for her. She is pretty much screwed of course but at the same time she irritates me. Here you are on living on practically nothing and at the mercy of a government program. So your logical decision is to vote for * and more then likely your local (R) officials, which incase was the really bad decision. She should really be sending this to her local legislature anyway.

I mean she is a grown up she should know better, hell I'm just 28 but I figured out Republicans = social darwinism a long time ago. The ultimate goal is the destruction of all social programs and safety nets, your not suppose to have them if you need help they want to see you beg. Beg to your church or beg to them but they set the terms.

So here we have Wilma.. someone who desperately needs government programs but votes for the party who will cut them and guess what they did. But here is the thing, Wilma never thought it would hurt HER, it was okay as long as it was brown people in Iraq dieing or young kids from the US. It was okay as long as those two homos she saw while shopping last weekend couldn't marry. It was okay as long as it was other people on Medcaid who were ABUSING it, no NOT like her who HAS to have it.

So inclosing Wilma you reap what you sow.. it just happens to be that this time instead of getting to flush others down the crapper while you sit comfortable you get to enjoy the view down the bowl as well... round and round, enjoy your ride.

I have a conflicting feelings for this woman. Sympathy and disdain do not sit well with my heart. Her desperation is obvious. Her lack of logical thinking is also obvious, though.

Maybe we could highlight her plea to the President by forwarding it to an appropriate Democratic official! He/she might even want to make a personal visit and turn her into an activist for the cause! At the very least, turn her into a poster child for the cause, and get her some help.

This is what happens when you vote against your own real interests. Deal with it.

99. I feel badly for this woman and her husband.
This is a horrible situation for anyone to find herself in. It seems to be waking her up. I wish everyone could read this and see what "moral values" are really about:

Dear President Bush. This is a first for me, to email an elected official of any caliber. I voted for you twice, because of your strong moral values. I'm begging you to use them now. My husband and I live in Tennessee. My husband has Alzhiemer's and Parkinson's disease, and Diabetes. I also have multiple medical problems. I'm also my husband's caretaker. We have been living on his Social Security check of $769.00, along with the help of Tenn Care and food stamps. At the end of this month we will lose our Tenn Care. We cannot afford to go to the dr., much less pay for our medications.
Thank you for your time.

"Please read this email. Please Mr. President."

Her tragedy will certainly be compounded when she discovers that her moral leader won't read this email, despite her pleading, and won't do a damn thing for her. It's hard to discover that your hero has feet of clay.

On this subject - didn't Kerry propose a bridge to Medicare? She writes that she's 61, and this is a difficult age to qualify for affordable medical insurance (if it exists at all) until she's eligible for Medicare. As I remember, Kerry knew of this problem and targeted a specific solution for it. It must have been drowned out by the Swift Boat Liars media frenzy.

Genocide of the unborn ! Killers in America!!

To:
President George Bush

July 19, 2005

Genocide: the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group. The left have killed over 40 million babies in the womb in about 32 years , Hitler would be proud !With the left tho, they will kill any babies they dont discriminate. Picture this they pull the baby out so only the head is in then poke the baby in the back of the head til dead. These are the same people that want to protect the terrorist in getmo, these are the same people (Ted kennedy ECT.)That are so strong on individual rights.. Now i ask this question... How can you be for individual rights and then condone killing of babies? There is a price to pay for murder!!Any abortion is murder!Wheres the babies civil rights. Oh yes the left gets to pick and choose to who have these rights!

And now she wants sympathy? Fuck that. Dems and liberals have tried to help their fellow americans to see what they were doing to themselves and others. What do they do? They just turn around and smear people and insult them without the slightest bit of gratitude.

She's 61 years old and she was stupid enough to vote for him twice? What a dumb-ass bitch.

126. Wilma is learning a lesson.
She, just like everyone else, has a right to learn from a bad choice. She like most, will not change her bad choices unless there are undesireable consequences for her bad choices.

It is a time of learning for many, many, many who have been duped into voting for this bunch of amoral creeps who line their own pockets with the spoils garnered by the sweat, blood and bodies of the very ones they duped with the marketing pitch.

Wilma is having a real life lesson now.

Do you think we'll get her vote by telling her she deserves it, or by sympathizing with her pain and pointing out there's *is* a way out of it?

And if we lose her vote (and all who she represents), aren't we just as stupid?

These are the easy votes to get now folks, don't chase them off just so you can feel good and get in one last "I told you so".

And I don't feel good about pretty much anything happening to our country, or from our country right now.

We may gain her vote, or never have it ever. I don't think that makes us "just as stupid." I do know that I am exhausted trying to convince values voters what Dems have to offer, just to hear that we are against Christians, pro killing babies, and the like.

Hopefully, before she and/or her husband die from lack of medical care and medications, they will see the light and vote progressive, Dem, or even moderate Republican.

EDIT: Grammar.

There is a knee jerk reaction in many posts giving the "you deserved it" tone.

And I do sympathize with that reaction, I find myself biting my tongue a lot.

I just wanted to point out that this isn't about reacting with our emotions, but winning votes, one at a time, by gently pulling them in rather than pissing them off even more.

137. No problem, I understand
I will look for that book.

What I cannot get is, when it comes to this kind of life-and-death stuff, WHY in the world do some people vote against their own interests? And, if the life-and-death stuff does not sway them, what hope is there really?

I sort of feel sorry for Wilma and Mr. Wilma, but in another way I am starting to feel sort of irritated with them. That is because I feel that, as long as they are safe and have what they need, they don't really care if any other human has it.

I cannot speak for the Wilma Family, but I am starting to get the sneaking suspicion that, if she felt that it would guarantee that they were kept on an entitlement program, welfare, whatever, they would have no problem with bombing, killing, or harming any other person. Tie this is with the "values" hypocrisy, and I am starting to think that only, pardon the expression, screwing the Wilmas up the butt is the only thing that may wake them up.

And it's sad that the rest of us have to suffer along with them, I guess.

In her letter she had a job and insurance, when she became ill she had to quit working and lost her insurance.

She was perfectly willing to enjoy her medical coverage and vote for those who would deny the same coverage to those less fortunate than she.

Would she have written this letter on behalf of others less fortunate than herself if her insurance coverage was still in effect? I think not. But, any Liberal would.

This is why there are so many fuck you Wilma's in this thread, and I believe Wilma earned each and every one of them, and to those I would like to add my own.

I don't feel sorry for Wilma either because I voted for Kerry because I knew Bush would provide no relief to the people I care about; People who are just as destitute as Wilma but were voting for Kerry in the hope that they would get some help.

People like Wilma made sure that Bush got elected so that he could put more money in the hands of the wealthy and that people like my friends and relatives would continue to struggle.

If Wilma is suffering now then I have no sympathy for her because she, and others like her, made sure the situation stayed the same. At least we tried to change it but we were thwarted by people like her.

You and your fellow brain-dead freepers voted to keep gays from getting married, to keep minorities down and unequal, unification of church and state, tax cuts for the rich, among other things.

You didn't vote for health care reform, economic reform, fairness, and compassion. You voted for self-serving narrow-minded socially-exploitive wedge issues that don't effect most people.

It's control. In this case, control by proxy. You look like the controllers, you think like the controllers, thus, you're a controller, too. Control is fun!

This is a thought I've dreamed about. We Dems would have Kerry and Bush's crowd would be stuck with him. We would have healthcare and a better life. 208. People like Wilma are propagandized relentlessly from all sides, so it's
no wonder that they vote against their own interests. What makes it worse is that American culture, especially rural American culture, frowns upon intellectual curiosity.

Wilma and her husband are suffering, but they don't really know why. No one is going to tell them, and they don't have the mindset of exploring the issue on their own.

So what can the Dems do? Certainly not call such voters dumbass rednecks, no matter how tempting that may be.

I really like what Auntie Pinko wrote a few weeks ago, that rural Dems should make themselves very visible as "plain folks" in small towns by participating in all community events as an identifiable group.

They should also put together a platform aimed especially at the working poor, containing simple, easily understood, easily implemented programs that meet specific problems. (Someone in today's New York Times suggested fighting Medicaid fraud by replacing it with a system of public clinics with salaried personnel.)

It doesn't matter that the Dems are out of power now. That's NO EXCUSE not to craft a unified national platform aimed at the forgotten members of society and publicize the hell out of it, by grassroots and stealth means if necessary.

215. "I feel that my own government has let us down"??????????
Wait, I thought that (dangerously stepping into my former right-wing self momentarily) government, by its very nature, lets you down. Isn't this why it needs to be drowned like baby kittens, to semi-quote Grover Norquist?

Somehow, I believe, if we get to the point of 100% privatization, the ones who'll be whining the loudest will be the blue collar GOP'ers.

217. My parents are DEMS & are in the same situation! Do you care about them?
My parents have voted DEM all of their lives. My 70 year old mother hates Bush with the same intensity as I do. They voted for the Democrat Phil Bredesen in the last Governor's race. They never thought that he would be the one to send them into bankruptcy.

That is their story. I realize that most of you all don't care about Wilma's struggle. Do you care about my parents?

I realize that our governor inherited a state that had been run into the ground by the former republican governor. I also realize that lawsuits tied his hands in his efforts to make sensible changes to the TennCare program. However I cannot for the life of me understand how he can ever justify forcing elderly people living only on their Social Security checks to choose between buying their medicine and putting food on the table.

My parents had no choice but to file bankruptcy to be able to afford to pay for the medicines that they could not do without. My mother's medicines alone run her a little over $500 a month.

Their TennCare coverage ended on July 21st. Bredesen could not even extend the coverage of those on Social Security until January 2006 when the new Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage goes into effect. I can't forgive him for that and he won't have my vote again!

Oh and don't even get me started about that fucking joke that passed off as "Medicare Drug Coverage"! Even after they get on the Medicare plan D they will have to pay a $37 monthly premium and it only covers 75% up till $2250. After that they reach the "Doughnut Hole" in coverage where they will be paying the whole amount of their meds!

My parents are beyond distraught over all of this. Bredesen let them down on all of this. I feel he could have done more.

But the idiots in this country that voted for Bush because of his "moral values" let them down too. I keep remembering that promise that Kerry made during the campaign that the very first thing he would sign when he got into office was an Executive Order allowing US citizens to buy their drugs from Canada. This would have forced the companies to lower prices here and maybe my parents wouldn't be so worried. What the hell kind of "moral value" allows the elderly in this country to choose between food and their medicines?

I am hating this country more and more everyday. It is all just incredibly sad.

221. Most DUers
would care a great deal about your parents' predicament. The salient point is that they did not vote against their own interests and then whine and complain about the results like Wilma did. Your parents are blameless. It is not their fault that ChimpCo has bankrupted the country to play Napoleon and has throttled the sort of programs that could help them. I have nothing but sympathy for their plight.

The Wilmas of the world present an entirely different situation. They are morally culpable for the things that have befallen them - they made it happen to themselves and are constitutionally incapable of seeing the role that their choices have made in bringing about their situation. Blinded to their own interests by a toxic, corrosive and hate-filled fog of fundie religion, they have voted to cut their own throats. I have no sympathy for the Wilmas.

To the Wilmas, I say this:
"Is it any wonder you've got no power, when you pay a thief to keep it for you?
Is it a surprise that your wine is sour, when you let a liar choose the brew he pours you?" -Bill MacCormick

223. bredensen is well i better not say such vulgarities here
no use for bredesen at all -- yes, he got a tough job but no one told him to take it out on the sick and then to puff himself up in the wall street journal with his prattle about responsibility, we can get that kind of crap from bill frist

old people, quadriplegics, transfusion patients who can't work have no way to replace the money and medicine he has taken away

when he's old, i hope someone is standing there to tell him that he can only take 4 medicines

219. she is betrayed on all sides
i find it heart-breaking

sadly the governor of tennessee guilty of this crime is a dem, a wolf in sheep's clothing, the lady may feel that bush and the gop may care, they don't, their policies bankrupted the state of tennessee in the first place

she has nowhere to turn, alzheimer's takes everything, her husband won't know what is happening or where he is, but she is only 61, how is she to eat and house herself after his illness takes everything, forget buying her own medicine

she has nowhere to turn and her only hope for peace is to die while both sides play politics

bredesen is a dino-type trying to get a name for having tough answers

he has no more heart or soul than bush himself

is there no way to rein in phil bredesen's excesses -- we need to police our own better
