What the Dems should do about Roberts

In fact I think that the Democratic leadership should take this opportunity to show some pragmatism and set the groundwork for a future challenge to Rhenquists eventual replacement while setting their sights on Rove/DSM etc....

A few points.

A. Short of a filibuster Roberts is getting appointed. While many might want a filibuster over this guy, the process would simply serve to further divide the nation and distract the public from the administration's dishonesty regarding Rove/Plame/DSM?Iraq.

B. No one knows how a jurists will behave once seated on the court. Once Roberts is seated he will owe no one anything anymore and will be free to act as his conscience dictates. This of course can mean anything from him being a closet moderate ala Souter to him strongly joining the Scalia/Thomas clan, either way I think we end up winning......

C. If in fact he goes to the far right and serves as vote that overturns Roe, I'm not concerned. Overturning Roe could be the catalyst that wakes up the moderates in this country to start tilting us back towards progressivism. With the Abortion issue off the table the USA might start to wake up and start thinking again about issues of economics and social justice.

These are just a few random thoughts, Roberts isn't the end of the world...we have bigger fish to fry.

it was meant as a distraction, and some are falling for it. The media is hoping for a nasty fight, and so is the administration.
The best thing we could do is say, no problem and wave him through, then refocus on treason. The Dems need to get on the same page for once.

2. Does it matter

that his wife was described on MSNBC this morning as a right to life advocate? How activist might she be? What involvement might Judge Roberts have had in any possible right to life activist organizations? Does it matter either way? What kind of judicial philosophy allows a judge to accept a ruling that leads a yound minor female to jail for eating a french frie on a public bus? Anyone know the facts here? Is he a stealth moderate with a public conservative demeanor or vice versa?

3. i personally feel it is going to take the actual overturnng

of roe vs wade to wake people. i dont think people want a overturn of decisions and polls point that out. i think the people see this go into effect they are going to become afraid, beyond the schiavo. as disgusting as it is to lose our rigths we fought so hard for, sometimes, we have to take a step back to experience once again, before two huge steps forward.

females, our young females, dont know the significance of this ruling. they are thinking they are so cute and macho supporting the repugs with not a clue to how that represses them and effects them. young females are dropping the ball in feminist movement. let them see a little of what we knew in the 60's and 70's.

abortions arent going to go away. i have personally see the die hard anti abortion person swing to the other side when it was a young family member needing that abortion. wont take long for people to realize we cannot be a society disallowing abortion and not taking care of our poor, minimum wage were families cant be fed, and this moral high road bullshit.

this is an ugly time of religion rule in this nation. obviously our people feel a need to experience, as much as i dont want to and hate it. i see it in family and firends, i am sitting in the shit in red religious belt area. i am disgusted. but i see, it is something we will have to experience again, as so many have forgotten and allow religion to cult them in their thinking

4. Oh, right. Let's be nice and wait for something "important".

The Republicans will be ever so grateful and be a lot nicer to us in the future.

We surely wouldn't want to "distract" the nation with something as trivial as a seating an anti-choice SCOTUS justice for the rest of his life.

How do you reckon that we will "win" if he's seated without a fight that shows that Democrats actually stand for something as important women's rights?
