59. does anyone remember that sitcom about the political family in DC
and the red-headed daughter who wore pink? Her mother referred to her outfit as "pepto-bismol pink". That pic reminded me of it.

It was a cute show - the premise was a republican family on the eve of the Clinton inauguration and how things in D.C. were going to change.

84. I agree
He could have humanized himself (is that possible?) by making light of it. He has children, he should understand.

If he was really comfortable in his own skin, he could have picked the child up, showed him the camera, handed him to dad and continued.

If people are going to use children as props (which is what this scene looks like to me) then be prepared for normal child behavior, especially that late at night (for a child).

I'm speaking of course about Bush.... I don't know what the hell this kid's problem is. And though I'm reading a lot of "typical little kid" stuff here... but if I pulled that crap on National TV when I was a kid, I'd probably just now get through with being grounded (and I'm 34). It is quite amusing to see the visibly strained expression on the mother's face - and in the second photo you can almost see the vein pulsing in her forehead!

I am taking pleasure in the fact that this blatant "Camelot-esque" photo-op stage by the Bush Administration (cause photo-ops are what they do best) turned into a commercial for Ridalin... and again, I'm speaking of Bush (what's with that teeth-grinding anyway?). :-)

103. BB you sound like me. I'm 35 and still afraid of my mom and dad.
Why she didn't keep a hold of that lil kid's mits is totally beyond me. I guess having him cry was worse than having him dance around.
I will admit he is a typical kid but there is time for typical krazy kid behavior and time for typical behaved kid behavior.

If he doesn't know the difference @ that age then I wonder if he ever will. Consider Chimpy who thinks he owns the world and can do whatever he wants whenever he wants. Not learning those boundaries has caused him to treat the world as his playground without consideration of others.

158. It's not that I'm afraid of my parents...
It's just that sometimes, they can simply change the timber in their voice just ever so slightly and it's like I'm 5 years old again. I don't know if that ever changes in the parent child relationship - course, it could be just the the knee jerk Catholic guilt reaction kicking in for no apparent reason (like Catholics nee a reason to feel guilty) too.. who knows? :eyes:

One thing I do know, there's no way my mom would allow me to carry on like that. I'm not buying the whole, "He's just a child, he doesn't know where he is" excuse either. He will know where he is at, and the importance of the situation if you communicate that to him (I'm sure he knows how important the President of the United States is... even if it is this President).

Although, to be fair, if the kid dressed up in a costume (which looks like something from the Shirley Temple "Nautical" Collection) and thrust in front of bright lights and cameras without any direction - how else is he supposed to act? We see almost the same song and dance when "W" is holding one of his Social Security Town Hall Meetings.

If I'd done something like that on national TV as a kid, I would've gotten the spanking of my life afterwards and I'd still be hearing how they couldn't believe I did that. My parents probably would've told me to behave before we got anywhere near the cameras, though.

Then again, they'd have to deal with three decades of me countering with, "I can't believe you dressed me like that in the first place! I mean, c'mon, saddle shoes?!" :P

I remember a time when people dressed like that--1959. Twenty-first century folks, even formally dressed, just don't look like this.

Look at his daughter...standing there quietly, shyly while holding mom's hand. While little John is in his own little world.

That just helps to further my assertion that boys are SO VERY DIFFERENT than girls. :) At that age, my son would probably have been doing the same thing! Boys and girls are so different. Night and day, IMO.

163. At the exact moment I scrolled to your post, I was thinking the exact oppo
site...Isn't that funny? I see the mother's passive behavior, her daughter's clingy fearfulness, the father's seething anger and rigidity and the son's frenetic Happy Dance as less an exhibit of nature than one of nurture.

I've seen girl children act just as unrestrained. It's a symptom of being overly controlled in private, while being ignored emotionally.

Read what these people teach their sons and daughters. Read how a wife must behave around her husband and follow his rules and guidelines. Boys are the "heroes," the "he-men" every twelve-year-old imagines himself to be.

The hero is never wrong.

My two bit analysis: I'm no James Dobson ( beat 'em). I'm for Dad and Mom spending some time with the kid and forgetting about the whole Supreme Court thing.

Do you really think the freepers care what we say about them? Probably not. Just like I could care less what someone else says. And nobody has yet said anything mean about the little boy like how the freepers did to Chelsea.

I came into the thread to see the funny pictures. I read the responses, most of them saying the kid is cute and funny, if dressed a little weird, but I also noticed some ridiculous (IMO) remarks about how the kids are obviously abused or Nazis or both, and how the wife is depressed/repressive/etc.

I just made a comment about how silly that makes us look. Kind of like Bill Frist diagnosing Terry Schiavo from a picture.

I'm not the only one who noticed and commented on this, check out the rest of the thread. Nothing wrong with commenting when we think people are going overboard, which I think was the case here.

I wasn't that shy to where I stud behind my mother at a public event. I may not have talked to people much (unless they talked to me) but I don't remember hiding behind my mother. My brother was pretty hyperactive as a young kid. Now days since he's in his twenties he's a lot more grown up of course. The little boy reminds me of how my brother was that age and my mother is NO stepford wife. If that was my dad he would've given us a talkin to before we went in.

As I have the right to say someone stating their opinion as fact that they "show clear indication of how these people are raising their children" from 3 photos then attempting to burnish their creds as an expert should stikc to their disclaimer that they "usually" don;t do such.

I also had a couple of years of psych. Guess what? It doesn't mean anything when it comes to discerning how one's family was raised by a looking at a few pictures as you likely already know.

Do we really have that little on Roberts that people's anger has just spilled over to such petty bullshit?

Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 01:03 PM by Lorien
frankly, this entire thread is nothing more than a petty amusement-like EVERY thread in the lounge (a very popular forum chock full of petty bullshit, BTW). My psych 101 comments-based entirely on knowledge of body language (remember that training in your courses? There is validity to such) were posted as a casual observation and nothing more. "Burnishing my creds"? Please; you attacked me by indicating that my opinion came from an utter lack of knowledge and therefore does not deserve to be posted on this forum. I've been here for a number of years and have mentioned the "family business" in the past, so that's pretty much established.

What's petty here is your open attack on me personally and your demand for my censorship. What was a casual observation to me was an opportunity for you to demonstrate your ethical and intellectual "superiority" on a public forum. That I do indeed find petty, and for now I'm going to drop this topic and this thread and go back to a bit of useful political activism (signing petitions once you've signed with a number of political action groups like www.progressivemajority.org , www.moveon.org , www.stopglobalwarming.org, www.usalone.com, the union of concerned scientists, planned parenthood and others can make activism quicker than posting on this thread, folks)!

First off, my first post wasn't even addressed to you unless you are posting under two names. Though I also made that mistake in my intial reponse, so we can actually drop that one.

Here was my response to the intial poster who stated they usually don't make such suppositions.

Your stuff was even loonier with suppositions about looking beaten. Have you ever seen a young child introduced to a large group of adults? They tend to hold on to Mom or Dad for dear life for a little while until they are comfortable even when they know the pople (ie: family). That a child reacted that way during a press conferences with cameras is not surprising.

"

Nicely played. Assuming victimhood is the usual go to move after you've been caught being petty.

Lounge comments are abound in this thead dealing with the Easter gets ups, 50's look, comparisons to Gulliani etc. Many of them are funny and semi-good natured(well its not like we actually like the guy). You decided to join in on the pop psych fun which was ridiculous.

Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 11:32 PM by tblue37
I also ran a home daycare for 18 years. I am too poor to own a car, so whenever we went to the store, the wading pool, or the park, I pulled kids in a wagon, with an infant on my back, or I pushed two in a stroller and carried one on my back, while the others, a bit older (3-6) walked beside me. They never acted up in the store or tried to race ahead on the sidewalk or when we were crossing the street. They knew how they were expected to behave, and they followed the rules.

First of all, the little boy is certainly cute. But he is also misbehaving. Over the years, 33 children passed through my daycare. Some were easier than others, but the fact is, I would not have allowed them to act up like that in a situation like that. There is a time to cut loose and a time to settle down. When it was time to settle down, I let them know, and they settled down.

Children can be taught to adjust their behavior to the situation. It takes time and effort, and a lot of patient repetition of the needed lessons, but it can and should be done. I don't yell or hit. I just made it clear that certain behavior was not appropriate in certain situations. If they couldnt' control themselves, we simply wouldn't go wherever it was we were planning to go.

Once a 5-year-old girl and her 8-year-old sister acted up terribly when I took them to the children's room of the library on a Saturday when I sat for them outside of daycare hours. They were pretty new to my daycare and very unsocialized. When they would not settle down in the library, I said we would have to leave, but when I tried to exit the children's room with them, the 5-year-old sat down in the doorway and reused to leave. When I tried to get her to stand up by taking her hand, she struggled and started to scream, so I simply picked her up and carried her, kicking and hollering, out of the library. The 8-year-old tried to stay behind, but I said in my best "Don't even think about it" tone, You come, too, and I mean right now!

I had said we would go to the pool that afternoon, but when they asked me at lunch when we would go to the pool, I said, “Are you kidding? I am not taking you anywhere this afternoon. In fact, until you learn to behave, I don’t plan on taking you anywhere at all. We will just stay here and play in the yard.”

The next few times I sat for them on a Saturday or Sunday, I kept them home. There were lots of things to do in the apartment and in the yard, so it wasn’t like prison or anything, but they also knew that when other kids were with me during non-daycare hours, those other kids got to go places—like the library, the natural history museum, the park downtown (by bus), the pet store, etc. They would ask me if we were going anywhere that day and I would say no, because I didn’t trust how they would behave in public.

After a few such stay-home days, I offered them a trip to the library, on the condition that they would behave properly once we were there and leave without a fight when the time came to go. Needless to say, they agreed, and in fact they were very well-behaved the whole time. As a special treat I took them out for ice cream after we got home, just to show them how proud I was that they had learned how to behave in public. I am not one to ply children with sugary treats, so they knew it was special.

The idea that a child can only act up and that 3-year-olds and 5-year-olds cannot control their behavior is just nonsense. These children who are not taught to behave at home or when out with their parents in public are the same ones that have turned our schools into zoos of the sort I describe in “The Inmates Are Running the Asylum”:
http://www.teacherblue.homestead.com/inmates.html

Little kids are cute and fun, and under most circumstances I would simply delight in this little boy’s exuberant performance, regardless of what political party his parents belonged to, but he is old enough to learn how to behave in public—especially under such special circumstances.

Plenty of Hispanics named "O'HIGGINS" and such. Plus in CERTAIN places of "Latin America" (Argentina, Paraguay) you KNOW about the Nazi influx. What might be questionable is that the blonde variety would be less likely to be available over there. Plus, "Latin America" is pretty vague-- where, oh where, could they be talking about.

the wife is apparently suffering. The kid may be a handful no matter where he is. If he acts up and she can't calm him down in a short time, there's a problem somewhere. Obviously no kids should be allowed to disrupt an occasion like this for long and I don't think this Mom is happy about it. Exit stage right.

45. It's the middle of July in DC
And that little girl is in a long sleeve dress?? It was stifling outside last night at 9pm.

And yes, Mom could have given that little boy the old neck squeeze and a "you stand still until I say so" threat, just like my folks did ever time we were out in public.

48. I think he is adorable.
And Eton suits like that are about all that is available for a little boy in dress up wear. He looks to be about 3. He is probably bored to death, not to mention up past his bedtime. And the little girl just looks shy.

roberts is an asshat, but the kids are cute. let the little boy do his thing...it's certainly more honest than anything else in the white house. if the mom had restrained him, we'd all be jumping on her head for that...

...speaking of which, i can't tell anything about her from the pictures. i don't know that she's unhappy, or anything. maybe she was tired. maybe she doesn't like cameras and publicity. maybe she was mad at the kid. maybe she had just smoked a bowl. i just can't say.

but why didn't the woman take the boy's hand and bring him next to her?

Little kids fidget, so it isn't strange that he's dancing. It does seem strange that he's doing so a couple of feet from either parent.

63. The MOTHER Is Depressed And Worried
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 09:50 AM by Binka
We can ascribe all the behavior patterns we want to little John but his behavior can be called NORMAL, he is a small boy kept up late and in a strange place with lots of attention thrown his direction. Kids will act up under these circumstances. Now Mom on the other hand is troubling. One would think that she would be Proud or Nervous or both, but this woman has got heavy shit on her mind and she is not HAPPY.

The little girl clearly is in touch with Moms feelings and she is giving comfort. THAT is dysfunctional to the hilt a child should never be parenting a parent unless said parent is 80 and child is 60. Storms are a brewing for this clan.

Bush in his haste to put out the Rove fire has jumped straight into the Roberts frying pan. Skeletons are howling to get out of this closet. In more ways than one. Crack open the Grey Goose and put up your feet DUers more good shit is on the way.

77. He is just too cute
I'm sorry that he is not well behaved, but he is acting so much like my son. My son was quite a clown too and if you didn't watch him every minute, he would be up to something. And my daughter would have hung on my arm just like that. So shy, so well behaved, such a contrast. But now they are 20 and 17 and doing very well. So there is hope for the boy. He even has blond hair like my son. What a rascal. I think I might have held his hand to have made him behave at least to have made him stand beside me.

I just think they are cute. Repukes are way too stuffy and he lightened the moment.

91. Great story!! Thanks
I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old. My daughter is the clown, she would have been dancing right along with him. My son would be standing close to me.

I agree, I think I might have been more proactive to try and make him stand still, but I also would have been concerned about a further meltdown. It was late at night, did he have a nap?

It is easier said than done to control kids in situations like this (especially if you are focused on not causing a large scene).

I too thought it was a cute moment. The problem as somebody else noted was *'s inability to handle it well.

A father, comfortable in his skin (John Kerry, Wes Clark, John,Edwards, even Ronald Reagan, no father of the year contender, JFK to name just a few) would have handled it would grace, charm and humor. Allowing the child a brief moment in the spotlight, then getting back to serious business.

You won't catch me in dresses, pantyhose, or heels. I certainly am not sacrificing my body to patriarchal attire. I have a seven year-old daughter, and I discourage her from wearing dresses, although she insists sometimes. But if she does, it's a very loose skirt with comfortable shoes. She wears clothes that she can play around in, not clothes that turn her into a porcelain object.

Oh, I'm not surprised that John Roberts has different values. But this picture reminds me that people like Roberts do not represent me. They stand for repression, whereas I live my life in freedom as best I can in this society.

179. No apologys
I don't know how to say this but here goes: He is the presence of the president of the United States of America. Why treat this lightly? This whole bush administration throws a fit when they want something. This little kid learned from his dad to cry stomp your feet and make a scene until you get what you want. Raise your kids right and I'll consider if your appropriate to interpret the law.

Olberman had it on. The first ever prime time nomination out of 107 times.

The show must go on!

183. As the mother of a 6-year-old boy, I think this kid is adorable
and is about the only endearing thing about the whole picture.

Maybe the kid will teach the Dad to "lighten up, will ya?"

And, I think his outfit is cute. Not much on the saddle shoes, but, geez, you guys, how old are your kids? At 4, my son was wearing short pants outfits (I think this boy is 5, isn't he?).

Personally, I think he looks OK - it's the Mom's pink outfit that looks stupid. The little girl looks precious, too.

I'm not gonna dis the kids or their outfits. They don't fucking care what they're wearing - and neither did any of us at that age. Garanimals? For cripesake!

188. Roberts fakeing it
I just won't accept this "adorable" line anymore. Like the whole administration it's not about them. They stink from the top to the bottom. The poor little boy looks a lot like I did, but my dad would have told me to behave during a momentive event. Bad parenting and a bad pick to overlook our nations laws.

192. I don't give a flying fuck if you don't accept the "adorable" line.
He's a kid. Leave him be.

The administration DOES stink from top to bottom, but this kid is a kid. He's being a kid, kept up too late.

And faking doesn't have an "e."

197. I just watched the video on Olbermann.
It seems that the segment depicted in these still shots is not included in the video, but what I saw suggests that the mother came very close to handling it just right.

Obviously the little boy is a bit of a handful. Since she should know that, she should have kept him within arm's reach, so she could settle him down immediately when he started acting up.

When he first started wiggling around, she tried to just ignore him. That isn't a good strategy, but under the circumstances, I can easily imagine almost any mother doing that. In our society, a lot of parents worry about looking "repressive" or "abusive" if others see them controlling their kids. That scene I describe in my long post above--where I picked up the screaming, struggling 5-year-old and carried her out of the library--is one that many parents would fear to enact, because nosy stranegrs might accuse them of abusing the kid or just being too mean.

Some people flip out at you if you control a kid's behavior in any way. In fact, my younger sister, who let her son (the same age as my son) run wild, used to give me crap when I controlled my own son in public places. She said I never allowed my kid to just be a kid. Not so--heck, I am still "just a kid." (At 54, I mean just a kid in the sense of thinking life should be largely play.) I am all about letting kids be kids, and I believe that a lot of what is called misbehavior is actually caused by setting kids up so that there is no way they can be "good." But you can't just let your kid annoy the hell out of other people in a public place or in someone else's home!

After a few moments of trying to ignore him and hoping he would settle down, the mother did what had to be done--she took the little boy by the hand (because she knew he had to be physically controlled) and walked him out of there, with the little girl, who could obviously be trusted to do so, following along behind.

From what I saw, the mother does know how to handle the kid when he acts up in a place where it is inappropriate. Because it was such a situation, and the cameras were on them, she waited a bit longer than she probably normally would have, but the way she took his hand and took him out of there looked quite practiced.

I still think Roberts is a disaster for us, and I still think the mom is probably a Stepford wife type. And probably the kids will grow up to be just like all those other kids of privilege we so dislike. But at the moment they are just really cute kids, and now that I know the mom doesn't normally allow the kid to be like this in public without attempting to control him, I can sit back and enjoy the show, which really was, you know, pretty darned cute.

Bet they'll be pissed at their parents and their parents' cronies in about 20 years. I don't envy kids growing up in a doomed world. Let em dance while they can - as their parents whistle while digging the graveyard of civilization.

206. Interesting contrast between the males and females in those photos...
-Males: Center stage, putting on the show, getting the attention, playing to the camera.
-Females: Passive to the point of appearing submissive, downcast, included only at the margin.

And from what I read about the good Judge Roberts, Jr., this is exactly how he prefers women to exist in his world.
