I also ran a home daycare for 18 years. I am too poor to own a car, so whenever we went to the store, the wading pool, or the park, I pulled kids in a wagon, with an infant on my back, or I pushed two in a stroller and carried one on my back, while the others, a bit older (3-6) walked beside me. They never acted up in the store or tried to race ahead on the sidewalk or when we were crossing the street. They knew how they were expected to behave, and they followed the rules.

First of all, the little boy is certainly cute. But he is also misbehaving. Over the years, 33 children passed through my daycare. Some were easier than others, but the fact is, I would not have allowed them to act up like that in a situation like that. There is a time to cut loose and a time to settle down. When it was time to settle down, I let them know, and they settled down.

Children can be taught to adjust their behavior to the situation. It takes time and effort, and a lot of patient repetition of the needed lessons, but it can and should be done. I don't yell or hit. I just made it clear that certain behavior was not appropriate in certain situations. If they couldnt' control themselves, we simply wouldn't go wherever it was we were planning to go.

Once a 5-year-old girl and her 8-year-old sister acted up terribly when I took them to the children's room of the library on a Saturday when I sat for them outside of daycare hours. They were pretty new to my daycare and very unsocialized. When they would not settle down in the library, I said we would have to leave, but when I tried to exit the children's room with them, the 5-year-old sat down in the doorway and reused to leave. When I tried to get her to stand up by taking her hand, she struggled and started to scream, so I simply picked her up and carried her, kicking and hollering, out of the library. The 8-year-old tried to stay behind, but I said in my best "Don't even think about it" tone, You come, too, and I mean right now!

I had said we would go to the pool that afternoon, but when they asked me at lunch when we would go to the pool, I said, “Are you kidding? I am not taking you anywhere this afternoon. In fact, until you learn to behave, I don’t plan on taking you anywhere at all. We will just stay here and play in the yard.”

The next few times I sat for them on a Saturday or Sunday, I kept them home. There were lots of things to do in the apartment and in the yard, so it wasn’t like prison or anything, but they also knew that when other kids were with me during non-daycare hours, those other kids got to go places—like the library, the natural history museum, the park downtown (by bus), the pet store, etc. They would ask me if we were going anywhere that day and I would say no, because I didn’t trust how they would behave in public.

After a few such stay-home days, I offered them a trip to the library, on the condition that they would behave properly once we were there and leave without a fight when the time came to go. Needless to say, they agreed, and in fact they were very well-behaved the whole time. As a special treat I took them out for ice cream after we got home, just to show them how proud I was that they had learned how to behave in public. I am not one to ply children with sugary treats, so they knew it was special.

The idea that a child can only act up and that 3-year-olds and 5-year-olds cannot control their behavior is just nonsense. These children who are not taught to behave at home or when out with their parents in public are the same ones that have turned our schools into zoos of the sort I describe in “The Inmates Are Running the Asylum”:

Little kids are cute and fun, and under most circumstances I would simply delight in this little boy’s exuberant performance, regardless of what political party his parents belonged to, but he is old enough to learn how to behave in public—especially under such special circumstances.

197. I just watched the video on Olbermann.

It seems that the segment depicted in these still shots is not included in the video, but what I saw suggests that the mother came very close to handling it just right.

Obviously the little boy is a bit of a handful. Since she should know that, she should have kept him within arm's reach, so she could settle him down immediately when he started acting up.

When he first started wiggling around, she tried to just ignore him. That isn't a good strategy, but under the circumstances, I can easily imagine almost any mother doing that. In our society, a lot of parents worry about looking "repressive" or "abusive" if others see them controlling their kids. That scene I describe in my long post above--where I picked up the screaming, struggling 5-year-old and carried her out of the library--is one that many parents would fear to enact, because nosy stranegrs might accuse them of abusing the kid or just being too mean.

Some people flip out at you if you control a kid's behavior in any way. In fact, my younger sister, who let her son (the same age as my son) run wild, used to give me crap when I controlled my own son in public places. She said I never allowed my kid to just be a kid. Not so--heck, I am still "just a kid." (At 54, I mean just a kid in the sense of thinking life should be largely play.) I am all about letting kids be kids, and I believe that a lot of what is called misbehavior is actually caused by setting kids up so that there is no way they can be "good." But you can't just let your kid annoy the hell out of other people in a public place or in someone else's home!

After a few moments of trying to ignore him and hoping he would settle down, the mother did what had to be done--she took the little boy by the hand (because she knew he had to be physically controlled) and walked him out of there, with the little girl, who could obviously be trusted to do so, following along behind.

From what I saw, the mother does know how to handle the kid when he acts up in a place where it is inappropriate. Because it was such a situation, and the cameras were on them, she waited a bit longer than she probably normally would have, but the way she took his hand and took him out of there looked quite practiced.

I still think Roberts is a disaster for us, and I still think the mom is probably a Stepford wife type. And probably the kids will grow up to be just like all those other kids of privilege we so dislike. But at the moment they are just really cute kids, and now that I know the mom doesn't normally allow the kid to be like this in public without attempting to control him, I can sit back and enjoy the show, which really was, you know, pretty darned cute.
