3. Tim Burton disses Gene Wilder's Wonka

Burton sought to blot out the memory of "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," the 1971 movie adaptation of Roald Dahl's well-loved children's classic that starred Gene Wilder and is, in fact, well-loved itself by some people.

"Bad movie," Burton says matter-of-factly. "People remember it fondly because they saw it when they were kids and, in their memories, it is great. My advice: Keep that memory pure. Don't go back and watch it again."

4. Someone who loved the book would have a hard time with the 1971 movie.

I know I did. I didn't really learn to like that Wonka (which I saw when it first came out) until my daughter got the part of an Oompa Loompa in her school play.

5. Wilder's performance was fantastic.

"Jaws" the movie wasn't exactly the same as the book. Directors have that freedom to change or embellish the story.

Burton seems a bit of a snob telling others to see only his version. Very condescending imho.

Funny enough the writer of the 1971 version was... Roald Dahl. Wilder is so good in the movie that it makes the movie great.

I wonder if Burton tells people not to watch the old Planet of the Ape movie too.

Wow, I saw it only on TV. It was terrible. Yeah, yeah, the special effects were better. But special effects alone do not make a great film.

I'll take the original Wonka and Apes any day. Mark Walhberg, you're no Chuck Heston (when it comes to movies, not politics).

9. That's right about Dahl writing the 1971 screenplay.

It's actually a very funny movie. I didn't think so at the time, though I thought Gene Wilder was great. The songs I didn't "get." I thought they were tuneless. I do get them now. After hearing them several hundred times, they really grew on me.

Nabokov is credited with the screenplay for Kubrick's Lolita, a film I like despite its divergence from the book. But Nabokov hated that movie--for its divergence from his screenplay. I don't think they diverged very far from Dahl's screenplay in the Wonka movie, but I do wonder how it came to be so very different from the book.
