Stars and Stripes letter: Bush must fire Rove
In this day and age of increased threats to our nation, any breach of national security not only puts the people of America in danger, it endangers our troops as well.

In September of 2003, President Bush, commander in chief of the armed forces, said, “If there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is and if the person has violated the law, the person will be taken care of.”

In October of 2003, the president’s press secretary, Scott McClellan, said, “I made that very clear last week. The topic came up, and I said that if anyone in this administration was responsible for the leaking of classified information, they would no longer work in this administration. This is a very serious matter.” Strong words meant to reassure Americans that our national interests are being watched over by those highest in command.

To keep the promise those words convey, the president must fire Karl Rove for exposing the covert CIA operative Valerie Plame, whose mission was to uncover the whereabouts of weapons of mass destruction — information of vital national interest in the war on terror.

Bush’s own father, former President and commander in chief George H.W. Bush, who once headed the CIA, especially understands the serious nature of leaking the name of a CIA operative.

“Even though I’m a tranquil guy now at this stage of my life, I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our sources. They are, in my view, the most insidious, of traitors,” the elder Bush said in April, 1999.

Recent events have proven Rove to be the source of the leak.

As military families with loved ones serving our nation in a time of war and grave peril, we understand the importance of operation security. We expect no less from those who lead us.

1. Bush will never fire Rove......
...Rove has to be taken down. With Rove gone, Bush will implode. These are cornered rats now and very dangerous people.

4. Given the excellent quotes in the letter, Bush is obligated to fire Rove
It would be seen as the height of hypocrisy in the eyes of the American people if he doesn't.

BTW, how 'bout that low profile Poppy's been keeping lately~.

7. "the eyes of the American people" implies a unity of vision....
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 01:20 PM by whistle
....I'm sorry, but if that ever existed in the collective consciousness of the last two generations of Americans, I'm afraid it has disappeared totally. Forty two years ago America was robbed of a great charismatic leader in JFK, the later in the decade the Vietnam War destroyed two more American visionaries in MLK and RFK.

What visionary eyes have been instilled in the stream of American consciousness since then?

8. Americans voted for Bush because they thought he was patriotic
honest, and holy.

Rove was at least one source who had outed a deep-cover CIA agent at a time when the Coalition is wracked with terrorist attacks. Although I, too, don't hold much faith in America's "vision," the bulk of Americans have at least been well-versed (by Rove himself) on the basic virtues that Bush was supposed to embody, but clearly won't if he doesn't dump Rove.

9. Manipulated, maybe,...but, I simply do not believe the American people,...
,...have become completely undone as you suggest. Moreover, what vision can possibly be created with such a cynical and hopeless view of our people?

14. Actually, bush IS keeping part of his promise - as far as - those who
were involved "will be taken care of." He's taking care of them even now - protecting their sorry, traitorous, criminal asses. He'll make sure they all retire to nice fat cushy jobs with lots of salary and little work - in either the Pox "news" network, or the American Enterprise Institute or Heritage Foundation or Cato Institute, or for those who want to stay under the radar and hobknos with the bigwigs - a seat on the board of the Carlyle Group. Yeah, he's taking care of 'em alright. Straight up to, and including, any presidential pardons they'll eventually be needing.

20. Great! The military gets it. They're disposable but Rove is precious.
Hope this really get most republicans to open their bigoted eyes: The Boy King serves himself and his friends and the Saudis, but will never serve us.
