Statement Of Senator Barbara Boxer On The Nomination Of Judge John G. Roberts

July 19, 2005

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today issued the following statement regarding the President’s nomination of Judge John G. Roberts to replace Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the United States Supreme Court:

"Without prejudging the nominee, I do believe Judge Roberts’ record raises questions about his commitment to the right to privacy, protection of the environment, and other important issues.

"With so many rights of the American people hanging in the balance, this Supreme Court nomination deserves a thorough and in-depth evaluation.

"Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s replacement could take one of two paths: Judge Roberts could go down the same independent, non-ideological road as Justice O’Connor, or he could join with the right-wing block on the Court which has consistently expressed the belief that a woman’s right to choose isn’t guaranteed, nor is the federal government’s ability to protect workers, the environment, and a family-friendly workplace.

"I look forward to the in-depth hearings by the Judiciary Committee and a further evaluation of this nominee."

2. That might be a good strategy
Focusing on making Roberts answer some questions. One suspects the Republicans idea of a fair hearing would not involve asking him anything as mundane as "what is your opinion on Roe V. Wade."

3. Now that makes sense.
Far better than the "Its all over" whining from the peanut gallery.

Gawd, you'd think you were reading a website founded on above-ground groveling, seeing some of the comments here today.

Advice: If any of yall think Roberts (a possible radical right winger) is gonna be good for the country, get yee to freeperville and leave the fighting to us. Or just STFU.

4. "You go girl"
I hope that dosn;t sound sexist. But I mean it in the most complimentary, politically correct way.

Instead of Hilary, I think Boxer ought to be the first female Democratic Presidential candidate.

5. Paul Wellstone would agree

12. All you have to do is look at Reid's voting record
he's not on our side. He puts on a show from time to time -- but he isn't really a fighter and that's what we need -- a FIGHTER.

14. I think we'll have to rely on people like Ted Kennedy to open their
mouths.

16. you're right -- Kennedy is on our side
My two senators tend to disappoint me the way they bend over -- Cantwell and Murray.

Although Patty Murry has a good record of looking out for Vets -- and has been trying to alert the Vet administration that they haven't asked for enough money to cover the huge influx of the bush wars Vets -- plus the existing Vets from previous wars (including the cold wars).

Cantwell -- who knows about her. She has been unresponsive to her base here in Washington -- and she is going to run again -- while ignoring anyone who contacts her.

10. Good and timely response
hope the rest of the Dems wake up.
This guy is a partisan hack for the Bushies.
He may not be as black as Thomas, or
ugly as Scalia, but he's just the same.

11. Hardly a ringing condemnation...
She is advocating what most here are...laying low on Roberts until the hearings...

Going ape-shot over it for the next 6 weeks will simply move the media's focus off of Bushes criminality.

Deal with Roberts at the hearings, rake him over the coals, and see if anything that could realistically sustain a filibuster comes up.

Until then, lay low!
