Another big reason to oppose Roberts
The RNC thinks he's "outstanding." Semi-fresh off their mailing list...

Tonight, President Bush made one of the most important announcements of his Presidency: his nomination of Judge John G. Roberts Jr. to be a United States Supreme Court Justice. Judge Roberts is a highly qualified man with sterling judicial credentials. He is fair-minded and compassionate and understands his job is to faithfully interpret the Constitution, not to legislate from the bench.

President Bush selected Judge Roberts after an unprecedented outreach effort, consulting with Democrats and Republicans alike. He has been thorough, thoughtful and deliberate throughout the entire process.

Now he needs your help.

To ensure Judge Roberts is confirmed by the US Senate, I need you to do three things.

1. Call your senators, tell them Roberts has your support and deserves theirs. http://www.gop.com/GetActive/CallOfficials.aspx

2. Sign our petition in support of the timely confirmation of Judge Roberts. http://www.gop.com/GetActive/Petition.aspx?PetitionID=5

3. Call talk radio, write a letter to the editor of your local paper and tell your friends and neighbors why you support the President's choice. http://www.gop.com/getactive

Judge Roberts has a record that demonstrates a commitment to faithfully applying the Constitution and not legislating from the bench. For more information on the nominee go to www.JudgeRoberts.com

The bottom line is the President needs your help. By taking the actions above, your elected officials, your party and your friends, family, and neighbors will know you stand with the President in support of this outstanding nominee.

It is imperative you do all you can to help Judge John Roberts become the next Supreme Court Justice. Thank you for all your hard work.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman,
RNC Chairman

It's nice for Ken to provide us with a handy tool to contact our elected officials, talk radio hosts, and newspapers. I say we make good use of them! (I'd stay away from the petition though.)

PS. Heads up, DU Activist Corps members - we'll have some new tasks soon.

5. Check THIS out....
Another LEAK says that Roberts was picked to try and distract the country from the other LEAKS...

"July 20 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush's nomination of a new Supreme Court justice may give White House adviser Karl Rove a temporary reprieve from public scrutiny of his role in the disclosure of an intelligence operative's identity...
Bush accelerated his search for a Supreme Court nominee in part because of special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation into the leak of a CIA agent's name, according to Republicans familiar with administration strategy.
Bush originally had planned to announce a replacement for retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on July 26 or 27, just before his planned July 28 departure for a month-long vacation at his Crawford, Texas, ranch, said two administration officials, who spoke on the condition they not be named.
The officials said those plans changed because Rove has become a focus of Fitzgerald's interest and of news accounts about the matter. "

What's with other's out here. Don't the see this distraction for what it's really worth. KKKRove is certainly good at being bad. And this, this is a disgrace and to think, I actually use to like O'Connor but you can't tell me she wasn't in on it too.

But if you remember back, her vote could have given the Presidency to Gore.

8. "Courting Disaster" - more reasons...
"...some ultra-conservative Republican-appointed judges are working to challenge the very constitutionality of environmental law. And new Bush nominations to the appellate courts and Supreme Court could provide the majorities needed to achieve that goal.

"The most important long-term issue before the U.S. Supreme Court, and the lower courts, is New Constitutionalism," says Sugameli. This extreme anti-regulatory philosophy, also called New Federalism, has been refined by corporations, right-wing think tanks, and the ultra-conservative Federalist Society. Born in the Reagan era, New Federalism opposes big government, and especially the intrusion of the federal government into state and local public services and economic and regulatory matters, according to the Cato Institute web site.

New Federalism would repudiate a broad interpretation of the U.S. Constitution's Interstate Commerce Clause, upon which much of federal environmental law is based. Until the 1930s, this clause was used primarily to regulate trade between states. But from Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal era to the present day, judges have interpreted the clause as granting Congress the power to regulate business with regard to wage and hour limitations, health and safety and the environment."

Roberts May Lead a Conservative Shift on High Court (Update1)

July 20 (Bloomberg) -- John G. Roberts Jr., President George W. Bush's first nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, may nudge the high court in a more conservative direction, according to legal experts and interest groups.

Roberts, who would succeed Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, offers top academic marks, a resume laden with conservative connections and a bipartisan list of high-powered admirers acquired over the course of a 25-year career as a Washington lawyer.

The 50-year-old jurist's intellectual heft and personal skills offer at least the potential to influence other justices and shift the court to the right, said Pepperdine University law professor Douglas Kmiec, who worked with Roberts in the Reagan administration.

``This is the makings of a conservative Bill Brennan,'' Kmiec said, referring to the justice who was the intellectual leader of the liberal court under Chief Justice Earl Warren in the 1960s. ``Combine his work ethic with a downright dynamite personality, and you've got somebody who will be extremely effective.''

12. And exactly WHO that would be acceptable to us do you think
Smirk would appoint, if Roberts didn't exist?

This battle was lost in November of 2004.

Why tilt at windmills?

Why not use the confirmation process as an educational opportunity to let anyone who is interested know that Roe v. Wade is going to be history because of this man, vote AGAINST his confirmation and let the republicans take the heat for the consequences.

Quite frankly, I'm tired of holding back the dam of craziness for 'independents' who the polls say count on dems to temper the RW crazies these fuckers elect. Let them reap what they sow.

Its going to happen anyway. Let the republicans take the heat for the stinking piles of shit they heap on this country, for once.

Notice there is nothing here that indicates Roberts' stance on anything, we are supposed to take milkman's word that the guy is highly qualified, fair, compassionate, has sterling credentials (2 years on bench)-sounds like hype and PR to me. Just the assumption that he will NOT legislate from the bench which, most likely, he WOULD.

He hasn't made his views known so if he's attacked they can cry and whine that we're being mean and we're being obstructionists. I think this is why they got him. They think (and I hope are wrong) he'll be a shoe in. Plus he's a Bush loyalist as well.

Thank President Bush for Nominating Judge Roberts
July 20, 2005 | Forward to a Friend!

Last night President Bush announced his choice of Judge John G. Roberts to fill the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court created by the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The President has selected a jurist who is intellectually powerful, committed to the rule of law, steeped in character, and determined not to legislate from the bench. During his time on the national political stage, President Bush has said he would nominate to the Supreme Court individuals who reflect the judicial philosophy of the justices he most admires, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.

By picking John G. Roberts, the President has been true to his word. Join us in sending a message of thanks to President Bush for making this strong nomination. Judge Roberts now embarks on a confirmation process that should be fair, thorough and swift. He is entitled to an up or down vote, and the American people are entitled to have a full complement of nine justices ready to work when the Supreme Court convenes for its fall session on October 3, 2005. Tell President Bush you will stand by him and urge the Senate to complete its "advise and consent" role promptly.

Click here to send a thank-you note to the President at the White House.

Sincerely,

Tony Perkins
Family Research Council

32. And another reason
It's understandable that the RNC is supporting Bush's pick, but here's another email I got this morning:

*The President Kept His Word In Nominating John Roberts. Tell Him
Thanks.*

Dear dumb,

The President promised to nominate an individual to the Supreme Court
who will interpret, not rewrite, the Constitution. He kept his word
by nominating John Roberts. Now he needs your encouragement.

As anticipated, fierce opposition from every leftwing organization in
the country against the President's nominee has already begun. They
will not be satisfied until his judgment, intellect and integrity are
severely attacked and his nomination defeated.

Please email the President to let him know that you appreciate him
keeping his campaign promise and encourage him to stay the course.
Tell him he can count on your support when the time comes.

Please send your email to the President today. We would like for the
President to receive one million thank you letters. With your help,
we can. Please forward this to others on your email list.

Your letter will be sent directly to President Bush in the White
House.

*Send Your Email Letter To President Bush Now!*

Sincerely,

Don
