Look back to the Saturday Night Massacre, Oct. 20, 1973...
Nixon wanted his AG Elliot Richardson to fire Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox. Richardson nobly told the president that no law existed that would let him do that.
Nixon fired him and replaced him with William Ruckelshaus and then ordered him to fire Cox. Ruckelshaus told the president that no law existed that would let him do that.
Nixon fired him. Next in line, he found Solicitor General Robert Bork. And what did the judicious, moral, immaculate, incorruptible, innocent, just, kindly, meritorious, modest, moralistic, principled, proper, pure, respectable, right, righteous, saintly, scrupulous, seemly, square, straight, true blue and trustworthy Robert Bork do? He fired Cox. Don't know if he bothered to base his action on any law to do it.
