I've sent a number, but apparently haven't struck the right tone for our paper. Maybe this one will make it...
Lately the Republicans have been making the media rounds to spread confusion regarding Karl Rove and his outing of a CIA operative in the name of politics. Given all the evidence known, they are clearly lying, hoping to cloud the issue so that Americans will stop paying attention. The media is complicit in this, rarely rising to correct these lies and make sure that the public understands the facts.
Many people brush this off by saying that "all politicians lie." Sure, our elected officials exaggerate their accomplishments, throw mud at their opponents by completely distorting records, and develop associations with special interests that have no qualms about hiding the truth. However, the lies of politicians have always stopped at the water's edge. They were always careful to avoid saying things that would damage our national security. Unfortunately, the Republicans have now gone beyond the pale, seemingly with impugnity. Karl Rove and "Scooter" Libby, in name of politics, leaked the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame in retribution for Joseph Wilson's (her husband) editorial that showed the administration lied about Iraq and its nuclear capability.
Without this lie about nukes, Bush's push for war in Iraq would have had little public support, and over 1700 American soldiers and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians would still be alive today. But now Republicans continue to bury themselves deeper in lies, hoping that the American public will forget about this. Let's hope they are wrong.
