I'm giving Roberts a fair shake...
I know that at the outset this guy looks like a RW toadie, but they thought that about David Souter as well. I've already read on several conservative threads that they are scared this guy could easily be a Souter type of Judge.

His record on the bench is almost non-existent. If anything he is extremely underqualified. Most of his career was spent as corporate legal hack, and a water boy for the GOP.

Yes, his personal views are conservative, but at times in my life, some of my views were conservative. Some still are. I disagreed with the Liberals on the bench on some serious issues, Medical Marijuana and Eminent Domain most recently.

I think Roberts should be given a fair hearing. I dont want to hear about his wife, his divorce, his drug use, his drunk driving, his daughter's pregnancy, none of it. I dont want his family destroyed, and I dont want his kids to need protection.

I'm giving him a fair shake...

and if I dont like him... well then we can destroy his family. (kidding)

3. Mods - please ban this user
Skinner has already dictated his view. We must oppose everyone associated with Bush and the neocons. We must learn to hate without thinking first.

This user is going against the group think. The last thing we need around here is free thinking.

:sarcasm:

4. It's the "neener, neener, I'm here for life" aspect of all of this
that intrigues me.

What do they do when they realize that they can not lose their job, no matter who put them there.

I dunno. I'm more on team Rove/DSM at the mo'

8. The Religious Reich is NOT Screaming...that is all you need to know
If the Christians are not pissed off as hell (like they were when that liberal sap Alberto Gonzales was floated) then we are in deep doo-doo.

The Christians know their stuff and they know who is a moderate and who is moderate-to-rightest, and who is a hard-core Reicher. They will not tolerate anyone who is even remotely moderate or merely conservative (note their contempt for John McCain).

Any SCOTUS candidate that does not produce outcry from the Religious Reich is VERY VERY BAD NEWS. These people are not known for compromise, nor for holding their tongues. Thus they are a perfect, highly sensitive barometer/litmus test.

21. it was a little skimpy as food for thought....
I had two thoughts:

1) her suspicions resonate with what the original poster here thinks: Roberts may be a Souter. And she has an audience on the religious right.

2) she attacked Roberts just so the left couldn't say the right was unified on Roberts. But her piece is very nasty, so I don't know about that.

23. like I said, Bush has fooled her like he has others
This guys lack of record makes things questionable for both sides. But the simple fact that Bush nominated him seals the deal for me. Nothing Bush has done has been by accident, he always has a hidden agenda even thou things at 1st look like they are legit.

24. I've always been puzzled....
that on the one hand, so many people say Bush is an idiot and a moron, and on the other hand, ascribe to him the cleverest schemes. I think it's possible he made a mistake with Roberts. The same mistake that was made with Earl Warren, Souter and countless others... including to some degree, O'Connor.

10. nice post
I don't necessarily agree or disagree.... I just appreciate the tone and the alternative point of view. Way too little of that here. I was losing my interest in DU because of the rigid thinking. Something like this keeps me hanging in there.

11. Maybe you should learn about his wife
snip

"July 21, 2005—Yet another first for our boundary-breaching White House: for the first time in American history, we're going to have a justice on the high court whose spouse facilitates financing and putting together global satellite systems.

"Also, the firm in which she is a partner, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, emphasizes among other things its expertise in facilitating business in Iraq:

"We offer one-stop service to clients pursuing projects in Iraq, from solicitation and RFP counseling to working with key government and multilateral agencies, and from initially penetrating the Iraqi marketplace to final project implementation. Our attorneys are recognized as leaders in their fields, and at the cutting-edge in a variety of disciplines relevant to Iraq reconstruction. A number have served in senior government positions in key agencies–including the Departments of Transportation, Navy, Justice and Commerce, as well as the Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Bank."

they have so much shit up their sleeves it's unreal!

and there's always more to it then meets the eye.

i know at first it seemed like a perfect little american family/deal/whatever--but we have to remember that so often things aren't what they appear to be

and the skeletons in the closets of this administration and everyone connected with them......could make an army.

THIS GUY IS HERE TO DESTROY ROE VS WADE, MAKE NO MISTAKE.

THIS IS THE SHRUB. THIS IS ROVE.

And dont forget Bush's Dred Scott ploy during the debates last year. That was a clear message to the Pro Life crowd about who his nominee would be.
