Rant: Daylight Savings

What the F*ck is congress thinking? How is this dinkly little half ass measure supposed to do anything? Peak oil means that the world is facing a serious and semi-permanent (unless they find an alternative) energy crisis. Cross border pollution is quite literally killing people in my city, and costing the province in excess of 5 billion dollars a year. The US won't sign on to Kyoto, won't enact any serious emissions controls but they are going to extend daylight savings time and want my government to get on board? Why? Because the extra hour of daylight means people won't need to turn on the lights inside! That's the f'in reason. This is their clean air plan! Never mind that the extra hour means that people will be driving around more, never mind that it means my kids walking to school in the dark in the winter, just think of all the light bulbs it will save.

The people that came up with this one need to be put away, you shouldn't let people write laws after a lobotomy!

1. Actually that's a justification, not a reason

The reason has more to do with farming seasons and what not, as well as tradition.

2. well, i'd extended like DST. but agree it's just a spit in the ocean

compared to all the realy effective conservation measures scorned by the present admin.

3. I don't see how it saves anything, but I like it anyway.

Living in Illinois, on the far eastern edge of the Central zone in a northern latitude, the winter months manage to work it perfectly so I go to work in the dark and go home in the dark.

It's horribly depressing. I would have us join the Eastern time zone if possible.

7. Won't change things much.

I live in Indiana, 35 miles from the state line, and in winter, I get to work just as the sun rises and get to go home at twilight.

Next year, we go on Daylight Wasting Time, which won't have much effect in the winter, just means that the sun won't set till almost 9:30 in the summer....

8. I tell you, the sun setting at 6:00 in November makes a difference.

Setting at 5 in the depth of winter is unbearable.

I'll take ANY sunshine at the end of day. It can stay light until midnight for all I care.

5. It's crazy

It won't get light until about 8:30 or 9:00 in late November. I'll have been at work for two hours by then.

6. Showing my age here, but many, many years ago

when DST first came into light (sorry, no pun intended), a big reason was for the kids walking to school/bus stops. That's my biggest concern with this move.
