Are some being too cavalier about the recent bombings? I think so.
I understand the need to restrain Bush and Blair from using the incidents to further their meddling 'war on terror'. I also understand the British showing the culprits of the bomb attacks a tough face. We want to catch those responsible, we want to ward off anyone who might feel emboldened by the (success?) of this bomber, and we need to keep each other calm, keep to our schedules, keep from letting the terrorists disrupt our 'normal' lives, yield to blackmail.

But, I fail to see the point in downplaying the fact of yet another 'attack'. In the midst of all of the restrictive and intrusive security measures undertaken for over three years in the US and Britian, and with all of the heat from the last London attacks, there are still groups or individuals who feel free and seemingly unencumbered in their attempts to terrorize.

This new attack highlights the glaring failure of Blair, and Bush, to discourage further violence against our countries. They have failed militarily, they have failed with their use of intelligence, and they have failed diplomatically in the sense that their attempts at nation-building have not lessened the threat of violence against the U.S., our agents, and allies.

As one witness to the chaos in England today just remarked, "It could have been worse".

1. People have become cavalier about daily bombings in Iraq
They hardly make it on MSM news any more, from what I see (granted, I don't watch MSM news at length).

2. Well anybody reading hear at Democratic Underground
Who has control over the MSM news, shame on you for ignoring the Iraqi bombings. Those are terrible things and you should spend time focusing on them.

As for the posters main point, I don't necessarily argue that the fact that the idiots in teh MSM aren't showing compassion for Iraqi victims means that we are justified in not showing compassion for British victims.

7. I think people here at DU have a better awareness and compassion
about the daily carnage in Iraq.

I meant Americans in general and the US MSM news in particular gloss over the horror there.

3. Is it taught in military acadamies that
if you bomb, enslave, torture and abuse enough of the worlds poor that they will come around to your way of thinking? Does any of what we are doing today make any sense at all and is there any reason whatsoever to be shocked that we are in a losing game? (I use the collective 'we' because I live and pay taxes in the U.S. and can't figure out, yet, how to get the hell out of here.)

4. That's not what I learned as a military historian.
I learned that, in limited warfare, you have to win the hearts and minds of the people, and you CAN'T do that through bombing, enslaving, and torturing.

Bush's new paradigm is not based on previous theory on limited warfare.

8. Agree. Bear in mind the military doesn't do hearts and minds;
that sort of thing is for diplomats, et al., the sort of thing which this administration is very weak on.
