The War on Terror cannot be stopped and cannot be won...
It's a terrible predicament we have come to accept as the inevitable. History may record it as reason for the downfall of the last great empire. Republicans don't want to stop the war on terror and the Democrats can't. Democrats are afraid to say the truth about the war on terror. It is a farce. It was created to feather the beds of the defense contractors and the friends of this Administration. They have exaggerated and used the events of 9/11 as proof that we are at war. But, no country or great force attacked us. No matter how effective the attacks of 9/11, it was done by a small group of bandits or "terrorists", if you prefer, but they were not and are not now a threat to our country. They are criminals that need to be apprehended. We need to work with other leaders and nations that harbor them to assist in bringing them to justice. It is no more than that. However, it is about to morph into a self-fulfilling prophecy that cannot be stopped and cannot be won.

2. our only response thus far has been violence. Surely, we as a
civilized country can do better that this. This I believe--if we had the will.

nothing civilized about a country where:
78% claim to be christians
close to 50% voted to keep these madmen in office
country music is almost mainstream
american idol is the most popular tv show
and paris hilton is looked up to

hardly civilized

12. Doing nothing is better than doing something terribly wrong such
as attacking and murdering people in Iraq and getting our people killed and wounded as well.

4. An older Vietnamese friend of mine told me...
That the Americans were in his country to liberate them from communism. Then they would bomb or napalm a village. Then the survivors of those bombings became VC/communists.
The more Iraqi/Muslim blood we spil the more will go over to the "insurgients".
The Neocons just dont get it.

6. "Terrorism" is the tip of the iceberg that is a revolution.
The rest of the world is weary of being our subjects. There's a revolution going on but it's easier to call it "terrorism" than face the facts.

7. Have you read "What's the Matter with Kansas?"
Although I haven't found it to be nearly as good as advertised one of the points Franks makes is that the main issues that the RW uses to get people's blood boiling are either unresolvable or they had done nothing to resolve them.

Abortion
Frivolous lawsuits
unbalanced budgets
Gob'ment fraud waste and abuse

and so on

They don't want them resolved they get the blood boiling and divert attention from everything else.

Aside from that-has there always been terror?

Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 03:08 PM by Beaver Tail
or was it dangerous and wrong?

Actually I printed a similar piece to your opinion in my local paper and was told that I was wrong and dangerous for my views. I am in the middle of comprising my thoughts to discredit the view as he only referred to London, Madrid and of course 9-11. Think I may have to refer to the past 60 years in my next op ed rather than the past 4 as my opposition did.

9. But we can't have a "war" president unless we are at war and perpetual
war means easy implementation of the entire RW PNAC agenda as the spineless democrats and we the people do nothing to stop it and the MSM shills on and on.

10. The US is trying to maintain a hegemony that no longer exists...
At least that's how Emmanuel Todd stated it in his book, After the Empire.

Our glorious leaders have taken us to war in order to control the world's remaining sources of oil, but have rapidly begun to realize that overcoming internal insurgency is not nearly as easy as they had previously thought. Of course, to pull out would be to admit that their plan was never plausible in the first place, so they have no choice but to push on ahead.

14.  You Can't Stop A Tactic
There is no war on terror! Terror is a tactic. It wears no uniform, it does not pledge allegiance to a flag, and it has no boundaries.
The tactic of terror has been manufactured and fermented by U.S. diplomacy ,by it's repression of third world peoples for some time now.
Declaring war on terror is a frivolous matter at best, we all know what has become of the so called "War On Drug's"!
The government assisted in the production of drugs then decared war on it. The government created terrorist's and now they declare war on the tactic.
It's sort of like hitting your self in the face with a baseball bat and screaming ouch, boy that hurts, then doing it again, and again, and again!

Study history or the world is a mystery, read or bleed people, learn or burn!
