more proof that their compassionate conservative leader really is more like Satan than Jesus.

Didn't Hersh say that these pictures involved the torture of children?

I hate these people, they would do the same here if they could.

1. It really is truly pathetic
to proclaim one is a christian and yet support anything and everything bush does and props up. bush can only get away with what he is getting away with because of his base (strongly imbedded in Mississippi.) I hope the pics get wide play. I believe churchs all over the country should have a slide presentation. With the yahoos around here there would be cheering.

How are things way up north Melodybe? I'm in Pearl River County (50 miles from the French Quarter) and the heat today is unbearable.

16. When They Filed For The First Extension, They Told The Judge
that all photos were ready.

They requested the extra time so that they could hand over the vids and pics together. There will be no more extensions. They said all photos were ready three weeks ago and there are only 4 videos to be edited. No judge is going to buy another delay.

MARK MY WORDS!

Now that will come back to bite them. Not just these either. There are over 1,000 more and some vids in litigation. Each time a new batch comes out it will hurt them worse.

And these are going to be far worse than those first shot that gotten written off as frat pranks. Forcibly sodomozing a teenage boy in front of his mother if no fraternity prank!

Please check out the new site I have launched with several other DUers: www.endtheabuses.org

We will be on them like green on grass over this!

12. Gotta Go With You On That One! Raping Detainees Is Not Torturing Them?
Besides there is a lot more stuff there. Allegedly there are some shots of murder too. Admittedly, murder is not torture per se. Except that some seem to have been tortured to death.

17. strictly speaking, it is a form of torture
"Torture" usually connotes non-sexual forms, but is broad enough to encompass rape.

The distinction I was trying to make was that they weren't e.g. flaying the kid alive. Nothing less serious or torturous about rape.

be treated as such.

My understanding the sodomizing was done by a US military contractor.

Not sure about the company. But, you can bet they will argue that they do not need to abide by the geneva conventions after all they are not military personnel.

That is one reason we are relying so heavily on these companies. They can get away with things our soldiers usually do not.

19. Thanks For Clarifying. Rape Has Been Used As Torture For Thousands
of years.

However, you will see people being tortured to death as well (mostly beating based on Hirsh's descriptions). These are going to sicken this country (if it still has a soul).

Torture, Rape and Murder are all tools being used by our government in our names and I know that no one at DU tolerates that!

Dobson, Perkins, Falwell, Robertson and the rest of that ilk will either come to Chimps defense, or they'll be totally silent.

But, that's only so long as the government does not request another extension.

2 by 4 to get their attention. The only way to stop this usless war is for the truth to be seen in pictures and video, I still have the pictures in my mind from the first release of photos.

14. FOR THE RECORD: They Are Turned Over To The ACLU Tomorrow.
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 03:32 PM by DistressedAmerican
The ACLU are free to release them as they choose. I would not expect to actually see them "come out" until Monday. Just a guess. But, they will not want those images to be a friday afternoon news dump item.

So, do not freak out if you do not actually see the stuff tomorrow. VERY SOON THOUGH!

public, but I probably won't be looking at them. It's too much.

I want every idiot freeper to have the images burned into their brains but I probably won't be looking at more than one or two of them.

I have friends over there are these evil bastards running our country are encouraging and ordering them to do this kind of thing.

I'm ashamed more than anything.

The best we can hope for is that people are finally shaken awake, they say they love the children, then prove it. Condem these evil people!

Why not play politics with the Abu Ghraib photos? After all, politics created the environment in which prisoner abuse was allowed to take place.

Public opinion is always what politics boils down to. These will sway public opinion. Therefore they are by definition political in nature.

I just hope it goes a long way to ending this illegal and immoral war!

33. Do we have ACTUAL WORD from someone IN THE ACLU that this is the case?
Sorry, but everyone gets all worked up about this stuff, and no one really seems to know for sure. The ACLU hasn't updated their site with information pertaining to this since June 2. People were left scratching their heads when the June 30th Deadline came and went, and we all had to go searching to find out that the government requested the July 22 extension.

No one has been able to confirm that it was granted, it seems, and no one really seems to know that the pics and videos are coming tomorrow.

So, with all due respect, DA- do we have any sources with the ACLU who know that they are getting the material tomorrow? Have they actually said this to you? It's "for the record"-- but is it confirmed? Do we have a link? A quote? Anything?

I think a lot of people have been left hanging on this, and rather than get people worked up with information that can't be verified, I would suggest backing up any and all claims, like ones to the effect of "they will be turned over tomorrow". Peace.

extensions granted.

The Pentagon told the judge that all photos were ready on the 30th and requested the extension because they wanted everything released at the same time (less damaging that way).

There were only 4 videos to be edited and they have had since June 2 to do that. There is no legitimate excuse for another extension. The original ruling makes it clear that this is a reasonable and thoughful judge.

So, unless they directly violate a court order the ACLU will have them tomorrow. That is a possibility. But, given the trouble they are already going to have, I doubt that they want to add violating the court order to their problems.

28. Rep. Sen. Lindsay Graham said "rape and murder and some very serious
charges" back when Senators were shown the pics and videotapes and he urged the Pentagon to release everything immediately to get it all out in the open and face all the repercussions at one time instead of the worst stuff being released later causing more backlash. I have never heard what happened to the perps of the rape and murder he described.

I wonder how thoroughly the media will show or describe the pics in light of the horrible spike of violence in Iraq right after the first pics were released.

The WH will issue a statement about a "few bad apples", "isolated incidents", "the guilty have been punished" and Amerika does not condone these acts. The RW have their statements already prepared and will send out their Talking Heads to minimize the damage. It will be a one day stir and something else will take it's place the next day.

I have no intention of sitting around and watching all of this material disappear down the memory hole.

That is why I and a number of other DUers started www.endtheabuses.org

We will be publicizing these images and putting pressure on the media to make sure they are seen. We could always use your help.

Check out the site and let me know if you want to sit by while the corporate media and the right downplay or if you want to take action to stop that from happening.

35. Hersh did say that children
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 04:53 PM by Catrina
were abused ~

Seymour Hersh, the journalist who wrote about My Lai and Abu Ghraib has seen more of the pictures from Iraq than most people. From an account of a talk he gave at the University of Chicago, you can understand the looks on the faces of those American politicians who'd been shown them:

He said that after he broke Abu Ghraib people are coming out of the woodwork to tell him this stuff. He said he had seen all the Abu Ghraib pictures. He said, "You haven't begun to see evil..." then trailed off. He said, "horrible things done to children of women prisoners, as the cameras run."

He looked frightened.

http://www.lnreview.co.uk/links/001967.php

I remember during the hearings, that after viewing some of these pictures (and videos, I think) Sen. Lindsey Graham was stunned and called on Cheney, who had been objecting to the hearings to 'let us do our job here, Mr. VP. We're talking about rape and murder' or words to that effect.

I thought that whatever he saw must have been the epitome of evil for him to address Cheney that way. Then there was the Nick Berg video, and the hearings never resumed. At the time, before the Nick Berg video, it did seem as though Abu Ghraib was going to bring down, at least, Rumsfeld and some others. Funny how something always happens just at the right time for this administration. I wonder what will happen this time?
