Chief Justice Roberts - try it on for size

I couldn't believe it when I read my International Business Daily today (long story, don't ask) and saw them kicking around Roberts as a likely bid for taking over the Chief Justice job assuming he is confirmed (and also obviously assuming Rehnquist retires or dies).

I couldn't find the IBD article online, but here's NPR tossing his name around for that:

So. Never mind Roberts on the S.C. What about Roberts as Chief Justice of the SCOTUS?

And especially in view of his helping Bush to "take" the 2000 election, his wife's helping out "reconstruct Iraq", etc.

I was just about to point out that Chief Justice is just a name, at least when it comes to deciding cases. Just one vote out of nine, he doesn't get any special deference.

Then I was going to mention that the CJ does have additional duties under the Constitution, like swearing in the President . . .

. . . and presiding over Presidential impeachment trials in the Senate.

Ah, crap. Rehnquist can't hold out forever, and odds are there will be a new CJ before any impeachment gets to the Senate.
