The Plame Affair: It's Rove vs. Cheney

When Colin Powell outed the Neos as a bunch of “fucking crazies” during the lead-up to the Iraq invasion, political lines between the Classic Conservatives (the Bushes, Powell, Rove etc.) and the Crazy Neocons (Perle, Cheney, Libby, Rumsfeld, etc.) were clearly drawn and exposed to the public.

Now, thanks to Traitorgait – a scandal which I wish would lose the “gate” – the lines of separation have reemerged.

The Classics are trying to pin the blame on the Fucking Crazies and the Fucking Crazies are trying to pin the blame on the Classics.

But they’re no longer waging this war in the basement of our White House; they’re leaving it to the operatives who walk among us. It’s the media operatives – traitors in their own right – who are being shoved aside as the last lifeboat is lowered into the water.

As reported tonight, Tim Russert – who exposed himself as a Neo when he bailed Big Dick out of the reconstituted nuclear weapons episode – is now being targeted by Classic Karl who obviously knows something about Li’l Russ’ forbidden Neo-alliance.

This makes Li’l Russ the third Neocon media operative to fall, after Novak and Miller. (Cooper is still a wild card.)

So, it’s about time for Big Dick and Scooter Doo to make a play, isn’t it?

Which Classic media operative will be thrown to the sharks to the benefit of the Crazies?

There is no chance that both Rove and Libby will survive this. If Rove can push it onto Libby, it takes Cheney, too. But what's a giggle is that Rove isn't in control, Fitzgerald is. I don't think Karl's chances of getting out untouched are very good.

6. A funny thing:

You can get a group of guys who fancy themselves pretty smart criminals. They pull off a crime, and then they get surprised .... some good cop has figured out they are involved. So they all agree on the cover story. "As long as we all stickto this story, we're okay." Right.

A good criminal can think of 25 ways to cover up a crime. A really smart one might think of 50 ways to cover it up. And the best ones think of 75 ways. But there are always a hundred opportunities to break a crime. And good investigators have the system down.

I believe it was on the second Plame thread, more than a year ago, that I suggested that the more people involved in a crime, the more opportunities those investigators have to solve it. And one of the most effective is to let the suspects stew. Each one thinks, "Yikes! I wonder if everyone is is solid? Or should I look out for myself?" And those investigators know how to set up those "steel cage" contests! Oh, they do!

There's a saying - "it's always the cover up that gets them" - and I've been hearing that saying more and more often recently. It seems to me that the more ways you cover it up, the more ways you are vulnerable. 75 cover ups will involve 3 times as many lies as 25 cover ups, which means 3 times as many ways to be caught in a lie.

My dad always used to say that it's a lot harder to keep lies straight than it is the truth.

Another thing, obviously, is that having two people involved in a crime doubles one's chances of getting caught. When we knew that there were (at very least) two senior White House officials and six journalists in on the "secret," it was evident that a serious prosecutor would be able to break the case.

As far as I can tell there haven't been any leaks from Fitz or the GJ itself. It is ok for those brought in before the GJ to talk, and we're hearing a lot of pieces that show that some involved (Rove and Libby) were less than up front about their conversations. I still pin my hopes on the redacted judges' opinions and fact that Fitzgerald widened the scope of the investigation "significantly." As the inner ring comes unglued and begin to try to save their own hides, Fitzgerald may have the key to blowing open the whole neocon basis for the war and a number of other treasonous acts. We'll have to wait and see, but I will be surprised if the only charges are perjury.
