Woman loses job over Daily Show appearance

Once again, there's controversy over "Controversy," the Broward Art Guild's May exhibit -- this time brought by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

The guild's board of directors on Wednesday fired executive director Susan Buzzi, who has worked there at least 10 years, after she appeared in a Daily Show spoof on an explicit art piece without consulting them.

"They called a secret meeting of the board and fired her," said board member Kate Barnett, who voted to keep Buzzi. "She wasn't `communicating properly with them.' I said, `Go for it. Publicity is publicity.'"

The explicit art depicted an Arab sheik having his way with President Bush over an oil barrel, an image the artist said he created to protest the role of oil in the Iraq war. Buzzi sparked a censorship debate when she moved the piece in response to a complaint.

4. Whoa.
I thought she did well, actually. The point of those skits is to make everyone look stupid, isn't it? I thought she held her own. She also made sure to get the exhibit publicity, which is what keeps money coming in to an art gallery, isn't it?

It sounds like they didn't like her anyway and were looking for any excuse to get rid of her. I hope she gets a better job out of this.

...the Broward Art Guild????

What the hell is wrong with these people?

I saw that segment. Don't really remember her as much as I remember the artist himself.

ON EDIT: Corrected typo.

...when Ed Helms introduced the Benedict/Nazi artist. He was at least 6ft. and wearing a yamuka. Ed Helms said "But not according to ___. The world's tallest Jew."

14. I remember there was a segment at the end
Where the camera got a shot of an art piece that she said wasn't suppose to be photographed.

12. That segment was hilarious.
She came off as rather clueless. Helms cracked me up when he rephrased his "controversy" question to include a shot at her jacket.

I agree with an above poster who stated that it looks like the Board wanted a reason to fire her. IIRC there was an article in a local Fl. paper that preceded the airing so it's not like her appearance was a total surprise.

13. That's too bad but...
In the creepy world of marketing & Public Relations it sort of makes sense. The article says she didn't tell her higher-ups that she would be on the show. I've worked in places where you couldn't record an outgoing answering machine message without clearing it with the PR department (who would then nitpick over language for a month) let alone go on a nationally televised TV show.

(Note: I DO NOT agree with her being fired--a simple policy reminder might have been enough. Or, GOD FORBID the people she works with could lighten up but then, THAT would make sense.)
