In Their Own WordsThis is a compendium of quotations from George Bush, his major advisors and architects of permanent war, his political advisors, and many others. Use it in any way that works, but I would appreciate dissemination if you like it. It can serve to remind what is behind the carefully constructed facade of this administration, and to motivate these last two weeks before the election. Several of these quotations are just plain jaw-dropping. Maybe one or another quotation will help in some conversation, canvassing, or letter to the editor. I will send you a more uniformly formatted version to email to others if you contact me: citizenvoice@earthlink.net
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
FOREWORD:
“But, to get back to Hillary. If she had said, ‘We're up against an elaborate and sophisticated conservative network,’ I'm not sure that that would have been all that controversial or debatable a statement. It's pretty clear that something exists. The issue is: how sinister do you want to make it look? And that depends on your overall attitude.”
Allen Ehrenhalt, speaking about the history of the right wing rise, 11/03/03
I have been doing a lot of research as a part of informing myself about the issues in this presidential campaign. On the way, I found myself with a growing collection of quotations from key players and thinkers in the Bush administration and about the Republican agenda/strategy for the country.
It was a short step to this compilation. My working title was ‘Behind the Mask’. I had previously made a compilation of quotations about democracy which was inspirational, words which call readers to their better natures. These quotations are largely those utterances the administration would wish the American public not to know; they are outside the script, and you get to decide for yourself which natures they appeal to.
The conservative forces which hold power today in the Bush administration are complex, and it is not my purpose here to fully explain them, or cover the gamut. But a few explanations are in order to follow the quotations. One very important group is the neoconservative idealists, who are true believers that
ongoing war establishing America’s absolute power in the world is the way to what they call peace. They were not ascendant in the Bush administration until after 9/11; we all watched the power struggle. They clearly won, and their “National Security Strategy of the United States of America" established the doctrine of preemptive war. Although their strategy in Iraq looks like a dismal failure, they still seem to have clout around what happens next in the global mission. I include a lot of their own words here both because of their importance and because they have many overt statements of their
real beliefs to choose from.
The Christian right is a different force, although with some overlaps with the above.
Then there are the
Republican strategists, think tank fellows, campaign operatives, all of whom are represented.
Some of the quotations have already made it into that ‘stand alone’ status as classics. For the rest I try to provide some context, or include enough of the quoted material to be clear.
