Domino's Pizza founder disappointed, must scale back his Cathedral
Thomas Monaghan had a choice: Pour his fortune from the Domino's Pizza chain he founded into building the largest Roman Catholic church in America, or the best Catholic university.

Monaghan, who entered the pizza business in Ypsilanti, Mich., in 1960, opted for the latter. And on Thursday he unveiled a new, scaled-down design for the Oratory of Ave Maria, the planned centerpiece of the town and university, both named Ave Maria, being built by the former pizza baron near Naples, Fla...

Monaghan, 68, who has spent two decades seeding conservative Catholic causes, said escalating costs of construction and engineering forced him to give up the dream he made public 16 months ago of building America's largest Catholic cathedral.

"I'm disappointed, but there have been such dramatic increases in construction costs, like , that with labor, the church would have cost some $100 million, and it just didn't make sense," Monaghan said in a telephone interview from Naples. "If we were to spend that kind of money on a church, we wouldn't have had much of a university."

Why don't any of these Christians give some of their fortune to the poor instead of trying to build up palaces that Jesus would simply shun?

10. Pretty much it
The town of AveMaria will be a gated community, so only "orthodox" Catholics can enter and live. They will be shutting themselves off from the rest of the world.

Well, how about... Oh, I dunno...

Feeding the hungry.

Housing the homeless.

Helping the poor.

god wants spiritual fruits, not religious nuts.

Pizza Hut

Buying blue has opened up so many possibilities for me. I am enjoying Pirate Booty instead of Orrville popcorn, Izze soft drinks instead of Coke or Pepsi, Boca Pizza instead of Tombstone, Boars Head deli meats instead of Hormel...the list goes on.

9. Too bad he can't have serfs/slaves
to build it like in the good old medieval days. Those darn "labor costs" - and in Florida with lots of undocumented workers to do your celsetial bidding.

I NEVER buy Domino's just because of this guy.

14. some one should remind this nut
that one of the main teachings of Christ was humility. Building the BIGGEST!!!!! Catholic church in America sounds a little more like Hubris.

17. Church downfall is probably from union labor
if he is complaining about high labor rates. That and many contractors are still busy in hurricane cleanup pushing up demand.

18. Just an FYI for some in this thread
Thomas Monaghan no longer owns Domino's ... it's still shitty pizza, and I'm pretty sure the new guy is also right wing, albeit not as bad as Tommy-Boy.

He's declared that he is in a state of grace and ready to go to heaven at any time.
