Frankly, I think the "real cost to us" has relatively little to do with military fatalities. The real cost has to do with the open admission that Amerika has embraced fascism at home and the jackboot abroad.

I once suggested to a gun-owning friend in grad school that, since he was so interested in confronting Communism, and spoke fluent native French and decent German, and was single with no kids -- he should sign up and go fight in Czechoslovakia or the Balkans. There was plenty of shooting and killing in both places at the time.

I told him "Go. When will you ever have a better opportunity?"

He never spoke to me again. Apparently it was all about impressing chicks in Orange County singles bars.
