Who has American flags from loved ones who served and have now passed?

Many of us and our family members have served with great distinction. Family members who have passed are given a flag at their burial to recognize their service.

I have my Stepdad's. It sits in a case on top of the hutch of my computer desk. I can look up at it and remember how proud he was to serve during Vietnam even though he despised the war. I also know he would loathe what his happening to our country and would come to hate the people running it into the ground.

2. My grandmother will later today (Saturday)

My grandfather has just passed away earlier this week (Sniff) from a battle with cancer. He served in the navy. He was never in any battles or anything like that but he still was active and in his casket tonight at the visitation his flag was standing in the left hand corner next to his head. There was a slide show (dvd) playing and showed some photo's of him in his uniform (two) and he was so cute. One photo was of him with his navy uniform on and he was holding my aunt as a little baby with a bonnet hat on and my grandmother next to him. They were such a beautiful couple and I miss my grandfather. :( He didn't like Bush at all and he voted for Kerry last year. I was so excited when my Mom told me that since I'm such a Kerry fan and my grandfather and I were close and he was my favorite realitve outside of my immediate family (parents and brother). Earlier this year around the Pope's funeral there was the photo of Bush and the gang at the funeral and he called Bush a moron. LOL. He had missed WW2 and had a brother who was involved with that.

3. My favorite uncle from WWII

It is a small flag because he was killed during the landing at Normandy and his body was never recovered. My aunt gave me the little flag that she received when she knew that her life was coming to an end because she knew how much it meant to me.

He was a marine and served in the Korean war.

I just recently cased it. I have not found a spot to showcase it yet though. I miss him terribly (he passed in 1970) and he would be totally disqusted with the current administration. I fight on for him as well as for my children.

6. I have my grandfather's - Air Force, WWII

Prisoner of war in Germany, but thankfully returned home to marry my grandmother and have my mom. Someday, myself or my sister will have my father's - 101st Airborne - company B, Vietnam.

on edit - My father is quite disgusted with the current administration... though he's not the protesting type.

7. We had my dad's but

at his funeral we donated it to the national cemetary to fly. He was a WW2 thru Vietnam Marine...he is buried at Quantico National Cemetery. They asked if we wanted to donate the flag so it could be flown on Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and the 4th along with hundreds of others. We also donated to support a flagpole to put it on....

Our family figured our dad would rather enjoy seeing his flag being flown ....and honoring his fellow fallen heroes.

17. The chaplain gave us the option at the end....

I think the pole only cost about $50...I live too far away to actually go the the Cemetery on those holidays, but in my mind it is quite a sight to see those flags waving along the roadways...one day we will go and spend the day enjoying it for real with my dad.

Pharmacists Mate 3rd class, US Navy, 1942-1947. She dropped out of art school to join the Navy, and always regretted it. She didn't regret serving her country, but she regretted that she didn't get the chance to go back to school since she got married and had her first child in 1948. She always encouraged my artistic side, and six years after she passed, I graduated with a degree in graphic design.

13. My mother has my dad's on her mantle

US Navy 1951-1955. I'm going home tomorrow to see her and to visit his grave. I was just thinking about his funeral today. We buried him in January of '77. He was only 44.

He would be really, really pissed if he were alive today.

He served in Korea. I don't have it in any place special, but I figure one of these days I will buy one of those boxes for it. Don't even know what arm of the service he was in.

18. One of my sisters has my father's flag

He won the Purple Heart in WWII by virtue of a Bouncing Betty in an Italian mine field.

My brother's flag is kept by his wife. He served in the Army, stationed in Germany.

Grandpa was a machine gun company captain in WWI.

22. My wonderful father would not talk about his WW2, Army Air Corps

experience.

What I do know is that he protested Vietnam, He died a few weeks after we bombed Baghdad; he was horrified.

I might add here that he served in Europe and was intimately familiar with bombs going off in urban areas.

23. My husband would've loved to have his father's..............BUT

His lunatic mother neglected to give it to any of her children. The nutbag said that she noticed that the post office's flag was tattered................SO, "it" flew at the post office for a few days, but as we all know.......cotton flags don't hold up all that well in the wind. My husband nearly disowned her for this. What an idiot. :grr:
