Lawrence Tribe, David Boies, Walter Dellinger and other top Democratic lawyers are supporting John Roberts' nomination to the Supreme Court, presumably in a spirit of professional camaraderie, and respect and affection for the man, even though they disagree with his political positions and legal interpretations. But would Roberts, or any other conservative advocate, support any one of them for the Court? Is this one of those instances where our people just don't get it? We play by one set of norms, traditions and standards, while the other side plays an entirely different kind of scorched-earth game.
Will powerful, prominent Democrats ever understand this -- or are they right in playing by the rules, and waiting for the wheel to turn away from the extreme Right?
