Assuming that Karl Rove was indeed responsible for the leak, which the investigators will determine, his was not only an illegal act; it was an act of treason. Former President George H.W. Bush calls people who do such things "the most insidious of traitors," for whom he has "nothing but contempt and anger" (April, 1999). President Bush should make good on his word: he should revoke Rove's security clearances, fire him, and see that he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But if the White House statement of July 12 that Rove "has the confidence of the president" is any indication, that won't happen.

Rove--Nah, Bush needs him too much.

Cheney--This would be a good one--Bush can say he was duped along with the rest of of us but if Cheney's really the evil genius behind all of this as many of us assume he is, I doubt if he'll volunteer to go kayaking. Bet he guards his medications really well too. On the other hand Bush might be getting worried that Dirty Dick may be bringing his administration down. The man has a heart condition, hmmm.

Tenet--They blamed the lousy Iraq Intelligence on good old "Slam Dunk", why not this? Besides, if as some of us suspect, he's been ratting on the rest of them, a tragic accident could take care of two problems. Stay out of small airplanes George!

Powell--He had the memo and fits Novaks description of someone who wasn't a "partisan gunslinger". Bet they'd give him a great funeral before they tore his reputation to shreds.
