One in four Muslims sympathises with motives of terrorists
The group portrait of British Muslims painted by YouGov's survey for The Daily Telegraph is at once reassuring and disturbing, in some ways even alarming.

The vast majority of British Muslims condemn the London bombings but a substantial minority are clearly alienated from modern British society and some are prepared to justify terrorist acts.

The divisions within the Muslim community go deep. Muslims are divided over the morality of the London bombings, over the extent of their loyalty to this country and over how Muslims should respond to recent events.

Most Muslims are evidently moderate and law-abiding but by no means all are.

YouGov sought to gauge the character of the Muslim community's response to the events of July 7. As the figures in the chart show, 88 per cent of British Muslims clearly have no intention of trying to justify the bus and Tube murders.

However, six per cent insist that the bombings were, on the contrary, fully justified.

I hope thats some sort of error.

1. looks like the headline is set to shock you
while the data is totally different...

which is it, "One in four Muslims sympathises with motives of terrorists", or "six per cent insist that the bombings were, on the contrary, fully justified"
6% and 25% is pretty different.

6. Still a little disheartening....
if 25% support their motives.

10. but what does that mean?
Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 12:18 PM by G_j
BTW, The link is broken and I can't seem to mend it & get it to work.

does sympathizing with a motive merely mean the person understands 'why' someone is angry? Lots of people are angry about the occupation of Iraq for instance. So far it is not clear to me what the question means.

13. From the article
Moreover, the proportion of YouGov's respondents who, while not condoning the London attacks, have some sympathy with the feelings and motives of those who carried them out is considerably larger - 24 per cent.

A substantial majority, 56 per cent, say that, whether or not they sympathise with the bombers, they can at least understand why some people might want to behave in this way.

16. wow
that still sounds pretty murky to me

"have some sympathy with the feelings and motives of those who carried them out"

"they can at least understand why some people might want to behave in this way."

what is the difference? I hope the questionnaire was worded more clearly than the article.

14. The innocent man killed
by the police the other day was Brazillian. That's likely what he was aluding to.

The statistics you posted are disturbing because it shows there are many Muslims that have not assimilated well into British society.

Most of Britain's Muslim population is from Pakistan, a country for which, and a people for whom, I feel absolutely no sympathy for. The Pakistani immigrants seem to have taken up the same zeal as their brethern back home. However the anger and frustration was in large part fueled and funded by the US and British governments over the last thirty years. When the Mujahadeen was fighting the Russians, Islamic fanaticism was only a Shiite problem ("those damn Iranians and Hezbollah").

Now it's the same branch of radical Islam that is angry. The Wahabbis in Saudi Arabia have given spawn to a monster.

But the US and British governments have shown they have little interest in fighting it. If they did we wouldn't be stuck in Iraq - which further alienated an already unsettled public. The US and British governments STILL haven't realized that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are the main problems (rather than Iran and Syria) and are constantly propping up a failed basket case of a country with military aid and debt relief.

It's strange, eh?

12. If this is the case
We are responsible.
How many Muslims lives and their families lives have we affected since 911?
Remember the Muslim pumping gas (I think it was California) right after 911 that was shot for no other reason than he was Muslim?
We are currently decimating a country that was no direct threat to us--which people are we affecting by our actions?
At what point do we--as a people--realize that eventually our actions will come home to roost?
We are creating what we classify as terrorists out of what used to be normal everyday citizens. Except that many feel that we are the terrorists and they are simply the freedom fighters.
If anyone still thinks that our country does NOT send terrorists (we have different names for them though--Special Forces, etc) to other countries to affect elections, overthrow governments, etc...then they are simply nuts.
No other country does to us what we haven't done to them.
It's karma. Problem is when it swings around it usually slaps you in the ass twice as hard as when you sent it out there.
