What galls Missouri Right to Life officials most is their belief that Blunt reneged on a private pledge they say he made during last year’s hotly contested campaign for governor.
The group’s endorsement of Blunt, Klein wrote, was based on his opposition to abortion and “a commitment he gave personally to MRL … that if elected he would sign legislation banning all human cloning, including somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), and would not work against the progress of that legislation. His subsequent reversal of this commitment was responsible for the failure of pro-life legislation to advance in spite of strong support of the members in both houses.” (Click Read More)
Fichter said Blunt told her he would sign a ban on “all human cloning” but that he supported somatic cell nuclear transfer because he did not believe that the process creates a human life. Fichter said she was concerned about that seeming contradiction, so she met with Blunt again a month later.
“He said that he would sign a bill (to ban cloning),” Fichter said. “We asked for a promise that he wouldn’t work against it, either. He said he wouldn’t work against Missouri Right to Life.”
Blunt said recently that he never made such a commitment.
