The Blatant Hypocrisy of Gonzales
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 01:30 PM by louis-t
I read with interest these two articles this morning and couldn't help wondering how Repugs would spin this obvious conflict of opinion by the same guy.
First article:

WASHINGTON -- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday that the bombings in London and Egypt make a strong case for renewing the Patriot Act, the law that critics say infringes on civil liberties.

One of the Patriot Act's most debated elements permits secret warrants for "books, records, papers, documents and other items" from businesses, hospitals and other organizations. Critics say the government could use the provision to subpoena library and bookstore records and peek at the reading habits of innocent people.
snip
Gonzales said he was as concerned about privacy rights as anyone but, he told CNN, the government can't let libraries and computers at libraries "become safe haven for terrorists."

The second article:

http://www.freep.com/news/nw/nat25e_20050725.htm

SENATE WON'T SEE ALL ROBERTS' PAPERS

Citing privacy and precedent, officials indicated Sunday that the Bush administration doesn't intend to release all memos and other documents written by Supreme Court nominee John Roberts when he worked for two Republican presidents.
snip
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales cited concerns about sensitive information that could be involved.

So let's sum up: It's OK to spy on the average Joe, but leave FOB alone. It's OK to out a CIA agent for political purposes, but when it comes to lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land, just take our word for it, he's brilliant.

edit for spell check.
