Hillary gave this speech two weeks ago. No mention of video games.

ASPEN, Colo. — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton went on the attack against President Bush in a speech Sunday, accusing him of damaging the economy by overspending while giving tax cuts to the rich.

The Democrat from New York also accused Bush of depriving U.S. soldiers of equipment needed to fight the war in Iraq and cutting funding for scientific research.

"I sometimes feel that Alfred E. Neuman is in charge in Washington," Clinton said referring to the freckle-faced Mad magazine character. She drew a laugh from crowd when she described Bush's attitude toward tough issues with Neuman's catchphrase: "What, me worry?"

When it came to the economy, Clinton accused the Bush administration of focusing on helping the wealthy while hurting the middle class, which she said has been key to Americans' success and stability.

She said the middle class is now being threatened by an ailing economy caused by the growing national debt, growing health care costs, the loss of pensions and the loss of manufacturing diversity. Clinton also said the U.S. needs to focus on exploring alternative energy sources to become less reliant on oil.

After all, she's done and said many worthwhile things.

But the more her own base harps on this nonsense, the more likely (I hope) that she'll get the message and focus on something more important and less silly.

For example, maybe we can hold hearings on illegal sugar-doping in amateur tee-ball.

It's a game about being a gangster, killing people, and being a street thug.

It's full of violent, gruesome death.

It's labeled as not for sale to kids under 17 to begin with.

That's like saying, "You know that film that's rated NC-17 because of violent content that no parent should buy for their kids anyway? Well, if you download a patch from the internet, you can see pubic hair in it."

She's not talking about Super Mario Brothers.

So for the umpteenth time, kids DO play GTA and they absolutely LOVE it. Those stickers on the box are not doing what was intended by whoever came up with that lame idea. Hillary, as an advocate for kids, is concerned about this. And frankly, I would rather have her working on this issue than the family values repukes. They will want the game banned; they do have a history of banning things they don't like.

I am just trying to help all you gamers understand that there is a problem here. Hillary isn't pandering. There is a big group of Democrats who are very concerned about violence in media. And parents need to realize that not all video games are appropriate for kids. You would be amazed by how many parents don't seem to realize that.

30. I'm afraid I have an idea how bad it can be

A few years ago, my wife's company had a "Giving Tree" for Xmas.

Needy kids would write on a paper leaf what they wanted from Santa.

Some of the kids wanted dolls. Or warm jackets.

And some kids wanted Grand Theft Auto.

They were around ten years old.

And their requests were approved by their parents, too.

So, I am not completely blind to the fact that stupid parents buy stupid things for their kids.

And yeah, I'd rather have someone like Hillary deal with this than someone like Rick Santorum whose favorite game is Indiana Frist and the Lost Feeding Tube.

But come on... of all the things we need to worry about... a little sex in a game that's already ultra-violent?

It's like getting worked-up over a naked nipple at a sporting event where large men crush one another to a pulp between Viagra commercials.

but I do think part of our purpose here on DU is to educate each other. And I am kind of alarmed by the number of adamant gamers here. I am dying to tell them that the world will not come to an end if they can no longer play video games. (But I don't dare tell them that :) )

I personally have written her about this issue. I know many others in my field (education) who have also contacted her about violence in media. Many of us who work with kids are very concerned about this issue.

No, we don't want to take your video games away. We are just very concerned about young kids playing them.

However, 1) this country is FUBAR right now, and we do not need senators flaking out over this nonsense. When the kids you teach are shipped off in a few years to Iraq, all because of milquetoast democrats, they are going to see real violence. 2) I beleive a lot of this flap is about prudishness. Americans and their leaders love to jump on the censorship bandwagon. Why not have some parents and educators jump on the bandwagon of responsibility over what children access to? No, cannot have that...we have to censor.

It is about just what you said - responsible parenting. Hopefully, parents who were planning on buying this game for their kids now realize it isn't appropriate for them. The game maker isn't going to discourage anyone from purchasing their products, so we can't depend on them to market the game to adults only.

In January, she used an appearance before abortion-rights advocates to call for "common ground" on the issue and recently joined with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., to push for health care legislation like a single system for medical billing that all insurers and providers would use to save time and money.

Hillary was the first senator to visit Iraq and express concern about the lack of proper equipment given to the soldiers by the military. She also spoke out about Abu Graib early on.

I can think of dozens of senators who have not done this much.

At least she didn't talk about "the failed insurgency" as she did before. Or, ask for 100,000 more troops.

And, someone should mention to her that the troops wouldn't need all that shiny new equipment if they were pulled out now. Or, that one of the biggest drains on the economy is the cost of the bloated military.
