I'm sorry, but there are more important things to talk about besides
Aruba. the MSM ought to be ashamed. Missing and murdered women and children all over this country and all they can talk about is another missing young blonde in Aruba. Meanwhile, Plame, DSM, Iraq, lying about the economy, and what is happening to the workers of America hardly gets a decent mention. It is disgusting!

4. What's odd is, I don't remember such a focus until Chimpy became pResident
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 10:06 PM by Sparkly
Were there other such "news" stories during Clinton's terms? As soon as the Chimp got in, we had the Chandra Levy case crucifying no-name Gary Condit and distracting the media from terrorist threats. Then we got Laci, Terri, the Runaway Bride, and Natalee, and it just keeps on comin'.

These are tragic stories but they are LOCAL stories!!! Why the national media makes them into national news is sheer sensationalism, and a huge distraction when the country is going down the toilet.

8. This started during Clinton. Remember the little blond girl
whose parents were accused of killing her at Christmas time? Ramsey I believe.

That was the start of it.

And the OJ trial.

11. You're right, I forgot the Ramsey girl.
OJ was a celebrity -- we've had Robert Blake, Phil Spector, and Michael Jackson in the news over the past four years, too, and we've seen several missing/murdered children cases scrutinized nationally in the years of the simian beast.

But the "missing pretty white woman" story seems to have escalated, unless there are others I'm forgetting.

2. But-but-but-but,
this one is caucasion, and blond, and pretty!

:sarcasm:
Of course if Natalie was African-American, hispanic, or any other minority...

Or if she wasn't so blond, or wasn't so pretty, the news media might not be as interested in...

who failed to pick up her child from daycare. Its been eight days now. Atrios wrote about her yesterday but that was the only mention of her in any of the news world. One mention on one blog.

Hope she's okay.

7. Old women, dark-sinned women, large-bodied women
are beaten and killed every single day.

Children are beaten and killed every single day.

And the US is doing its share of killing and maiming in Iraq everyday.

Those are SERIOUS issues, all three, and they deserve attention. But this focus on one pretty young white woman at a time as national news is absurd. Beyond mere sensationalism for ratings that distract from news that actually impacts people's lives, it also masks the real problems of domestic violence, child abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, poverty, mental illness, gun violence, etc...

I wonder whether people feel oddly secure seeing ONE woman focused on nationally for months as a time, getting a sense that it's remote and rare and disconnected from problems nearby.

The national media is worse than a joke.

9. Get THIS......
My friend was at work the other day and one of her customer's had just returned from a vacation in Aruba. My friend asked her about this case and if it was getting different coverage over there. The lady told her it was NIGHT and DAY...

First, the girl is a KNOWN runaway. She had run away when on vacation before and was gone for a week (I don't think that's the case here though, JMO)

The government of Aruba is putting mom up at a beachfront hotel, ALL EXPENSES PAID.

The mom is out sitting on the beach EVERYDAY sunning herself.... having a nice little vacation.

The parents have already been given $25,000 (by the gov?) and are trying to get $200,000 in a lawsuit. (against whom, I have no clue)

I guess the lady learned all this from THEIR media.

I have never heard ONE PEEP of this stuff from OUR so-called media. The story is playing differently over there. Our Corporate Media SUCKS.

A park ranger found the duct tape while collecting trash Sunday on rocks at Boca Tortuga, an inlet in front of a series of caves, said National Park Ranger Service spokeswoman Dilma Arends. Boca Tortuga is on the opposite side...

July 14, 2005 -- JORAN Van Der Sloot, the prime suspect in the disappearance in Aruba of vacationing Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, is already guilty — of being a lousy poker player. Van Der Sloot, the 17-year-old son of an Aruban justice official, is being held in connection with the vanishing of 18-year-old Holloway. He was a bad bluffer and lost big during a Texas Hold 'Em tournament on the Caribbean island back in April. Miami club impresario Tommy Pooch, who played next to Van Der Sloot for more than two hours, tells us the Dutch-born youth "was as nice...

Obfuscatory testimony, blaming the victim "highly-developed" in islanders This crime scene delineation belies the stark truth about Aruba: the the congenital obfuscatory penchant of the islanders. This alone clutched the Rand McNally pennant in its category. Aruba—In a surprising-yet-gratifying result, the island of Aruba was honored as the place “with a silent, cooperative population” conducive to committing unrequited rapes and murders of Americans. “This was a tough competition,” said one Rand-McNally researcher. “A lot of places have the populous engaged in the silent mode, but usually it’s also contained within a coercive environment. The voluntary and obvious desire to impede...

Authorities in Aruba arrested Thursday the father of Joran van der Sloot (search), the 17-year-old held in connection with the disappearance of missing Alabama high school student Natalee Holloway (search). The arrest does not necessarily mean that authorities believe that Paul van der Sloot knows what happened to Natalee. But Aruban law gives authorities significant leeway to hold someone in custody without charging them with a crime as a way to find out more about an incident.
