"Mel Gibson Plans Another Historical Epic"
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Mel Gibson is planning another historical epic. And like "The Passion of the Christ," it will be shot in an archaic tongue. The writer-director plans an October starting date to shoot "Apocalypto," set 500 years ago in Central America, his spokesman, Alan Nierob, said Monday.

Dialogue will be spoken in an obscure Mayan dialect, in the same way Gibson used Aramaic and Latin for his religious blockbuster "The Passion."

Also like "The Passion," Gibson will bankroll "Apocalypto" himself. Disney has signed on to release it domestically for a fee, similar to the deal Gibson struck with Newmarket Films to distribute "The Passion," one of 2004's top hits with $370 million in domestic revenues.

"We couldn't be more excited about working again with Mel and his team," said Dick Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, whose previous collaborations with Gibson include "Signs" and "Ransom.""This is one of the most original and unique scripts we've ever had the opportunity to read recently, and we plan for this to be an anchor of our summer schedule."

3. Will this be the one where the Catholics
bring Freedom, Liberty and Christianity to the poor savages of Central America? If he wants to cover all the bases, he should put Neil Young's "Cortez The Killer" on the soundtrack. Maybe the right wing loonies will adopt it as an anthem in the same way that dumb old Ronnie Reagan thought Bruce's "Born In The USA" was a celebration of all that was great about America.

8. Sorry to disappoint you.
Most accounts of the film say it is actually set 3000 years in the past. And that is NOT religious.

Not to excuse the Spanish exploitation of the New World--but which invaders exterminated the locals more efficiently?

5. Will it be about the Mayans?
Isn't Mayan civilization one of those that collapsed due to environmental abuse?

9. Hey, I'm reading that book
Collapse, by Jared Diamond.

Yes, that's what he says - a combination of war and environmental destruction.

7. Seeing as how the sort of people who went to see "The Passion"...
...probably don't care about brown people in South America, he should have made a sequel to his last movie, instead. Call it, "The Passion of the Payback" where Jesus is resurrected from the dead and then gets his revenge, armed to the teeth, Rambo-style. Give your audience what they really want:

Explosions!!! Blood!!! Gore!!! "Go ahead, Jews, don't accept me as your messiah and make my day..."

...did I already mention explosions?

11. If he's thinking this will be successful because Passion was
he's got another think coming. It could be successful (?), but Passion was required viewing by all the fundie Christian types. They aren't going to care about this movie.

12. They will probably go because "Mel" made it.
The average fundamentalist is not very curious. Most are led like sheep. They will support mel because there is a link between him and Jesus in their minds.

13. Well ! I never heard such language!
What is it with Mad Mel and the language thing?

I think subtitles can cover for bad acting because you read the lines the way you want and it is harder to focus on the actor's delivery.

I half expect to see Gibson announce plans for a film in patois, aramaic, and dolphin clicks.
