This afternoon was talking with a friend in Vegas, who had a friend from LA visiting. Through my friend (we were on the phone) I asked how the other lady was going to vote on the recall. My friend wisely, quickly handed over the phone (didn't want to play go between in a debate after her friend admitted she was going to vote for ahrnie).
This woman - who is an older student at a respectable U - was full of Davis disinformation (her favorite morning radio show had been against davis and pro - recall since before the signatures, she said). She raised some accusations that didn't sound right - I asked her that if I dug around and found different information/news items that wasn't the spinn - would she be interested. Yes said she. But she wasn't budging on the Recall/Davis question. In this conversation I stated how slanted at time the media seems - almost like proproganda. She said she was aware (and thus open for more information).
Then I said - at least vote for Ariana over Arhnald (I knew she fancied herself as quasi feminist - and maybe the ariana angle would atleast take away an arnie vote). She said that she had been very disappointed at how Ariana came off in the debate - she was so snippy... she (my friend's freind) repeated the Arianna quote about how Arnie treats woman - with a shocked tone.
I told her - well you know, she's got a point. I told her about Arnies antics 2 years ago in Britain while promoting a movie... She gasped... hadn't heard that. Told her about the Oui article... she gasped... hadn't heard that. Then, I said I had read an article about a rape victim who had been interviewed by Maria Shriver, who stated that after the interview (off camera) Maria commisserated (how awful for you) and then said that her husband would leave her if she had been raped, because she would be damaged goods. I asked... funny how I have found these things - from media sources, but that they really aren't much in the mainstream media. She agreed.
We had to break off the conversation - and then spoke five minutes later. My friend picks up the phone laughing... "She (the other friend) said there is NO WAY she is going to vote for Arnold".
Later conversation cleared up some of the misiniformation about the energy crisis and Davis' role, the budget crisis and the overall manipulation of the process by the republicans. She is now waivering on the Recall vote as well.
I better go - have to look for some sources for her. Would love to hit the grand slam and have turned an arnold vote - to a No on Recall!
Folks not in California, talk to your friends in the sunshine state. Alot of information we know - is not known by those not watching the media like a hawk. Casual listening can skew even often progressive folks perspectives.
I left Calfornia in '99. Think this weekend I might have to touch base with friends still out there... just to make sure that they are thinking... NO ON RECALL!
