DLC Position on Global Warming...
<snip>

Without question, the specific commitments that the Kyoto Protocol asks the United States to make must be reworked, but that's no excuse for walking away from the process, and from the issue of the greenhouse gas emissions that virtually all scientists now agree are an important contributor to potentially catastrophic changes in the world's climate. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, whom no one can accuse of anti-Americanism, has repeatedly called on the United States to take action on greenhouse gas emissions (especially carbon dioxide) in a way that parallels the Kyoto process. Specifically, he has urged that we adopt a "cap-and-trade" system to place limits on greenhouse gas emissions while allowing utilities and industry generally to win and sell credits for exceeding the targets, an approach we have long championed because it provides a powerful market incentive for environmental stewardship and the development of new "green" technologies. A "cap-and-trade" system is also the object of bipartisan legislation, which is gaining new support each day, sponsored by Sens. Joe Lieberman and John McCain.

Having flip-flopped on a 2000 campaign pledge to support a cap on carbon emissions, the president continues to vacillate between voluntary, go-slow efforts to encourage good corporate behavior on greenhouse gas emissions, and frank identification with the Ostrich Faction of conservative activists who deny all the evidence of climate change as a matter of ideology.

9. Not trying to hide anything...
Just trying to have a discussion about the actual DLC positions on things. There are alot of posts about the DLC in general, with not alot about specific issues...just thought it would be useful to dig under the surface a bit!!

4. So what's YOUR opinion Elmer. Anyone can cut & paste
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 09:28 PM by Jersey Devil
You've cut and pasted bits of several DLC positions and I don't see any input or discussion from you. What's your point. We all obviously have web browsers and can read at their site any time we want.

7. Well...I tell ya...
I know anyone can cut and paste...but you know...people have been talking about the DLC quite a bit lately, and their opinions on the positions they take...I just thought it might be worthwhile to post those positions to stimulate discussion on each of them...that's all...nothing nefarious

I have posted quite a bit on the discussion regarding Guns...

Here is the thread in case you didn't see it

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4196785

ALso posted on the CAFTA thread, though more asking questions...I'm not really familiar with the issues involved there, but from talking with others am coming to the conclusion it is not something we should do

That thread is here

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4197698

I believe I did post an opinion on the Energy policy thread though that didn't get too much traffic so not alot of opportunity for dialogue there

Thread here

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4197306

As for the others...just thought I'd sit back and see what others had to say, then join in a bit.

10. Yeah, you posted a lot, but most of it is like you were a talk show host
asking questions to get others to commit themselves without committing yourself.

So I have a question for you. Do you approve of most DLC positions?

11. Well...
I ask questions to draw people out on their opinions so we can have a discussion....alot of times people have such strong opinions on things that one line of rage/or pleasure gets put out there with no specifics...I'm interested in the specifics

To tell you the truth I haven't gone through all of their position papers, so I can't speak about all of it but...from what I have looked at so far...

On guns, I am pretty much in line with their position. It is clear most democrats, most liberals as a matter of fact are not trying to take away everyone's gun. Most people I think are in favor of some controls, assault weapons, background checks etc...which is where the DLC seems to come down. I think they have some interesting ideas as to how we get out from under this stereotype the NRA has been so successful at tagging us with.

On CAFTA, I have a real knowledge deficiency, but from what I am reading, and from what others have said it looks like a bad idea to me. Minimal labor and Environmental guarantees. Seems to me these countries probably do not have enough wealth to buy our products even at a lower price. We ought to help them develop their economic infrastructure before we pass something like this...though I really do need to look at it more.

On Energy, the position papers I have read look pretty in line with what I see most people advocate on DU anyway. No ANWR, conservation, fuel standards, alternate energy. Not enough emphasis on public transportation though. But compared to the repubs...far superior

On the global warming...again their position looks in line with my
own.

Same with stem cell...

On gitmo...I would close the place, but am not sure civilian courts are the proper venue. Also not happy with allowing President to decide a prisoners status. I am happy that someone in Congress is stepping up try and regularize their treatment, and offer some guarantee of fair treatment...but it probably doesn't go far enough!

How's that?

8. Certainly not...
There just has been alot of discussion lately regarding the DLC, with everyone expressing their opinions on them one way or the other...and I just thought it would be useful to actually post their positions on various issues to discuss each in turn...that's all...nothing sinister.

I'm not making anything up...just cutting and pasting...but it seems to focus the discussion on issues more narrowly than general discussions on the DLC itself
