Pentagon probes use of apparent fake quotes in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Pentagon said it was investigating the use of near-identical quotations from unidentified Iraqis in official news releases that criticized insurgent bombings.

A news release from the US Army's Task Force Baghdad 3rd Infantry Division on Sunday following a Baghdad car-bombing quoted an unnamed Iraqi as calling the bombers "enemies of humanity without religion or any sort of ethics."

"They have attacked my community today and I will now take the fight to the terrorists," the quote continued.

After a car bomb on July 13, the unit issued a news release which quoted an unidentified Iraqi as saying exactly the same thing.
