Poll question: Would you go to space?
Whether it's on the space shuttle or some other form of civilian travel provided by private enterprise and the opportunity was there, would you go?

7. Not on the space shuttle. No way, no how. That thing is a dice-throw....
...every time it goes up.

But, I would love to take a ride in this....

Rocket ship wins $10 million prize, sets course for space tourism
<http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2004/10/04/state1500EDT0091.DTL>

QUOTE:

SpaceShipOne streaked into space for the second time in five days to win the Ansari X Prize. Mission officials said the flight was flawless.

"This is the true frontier of transportation," said Marion C. Blakey, head of the Federal Aviation Administration, who stood near the runway to watch the flight. "It feels a little bit like Kitty Hawk must have."

The privately owned manned rocket left Mojave Airport north of Los Angeles at dawn aboard a mother plane named White Knight that carried it to an altitude of 46,000 feet.

From there it was launched on a half-hour flight that took it to an altitude of more than 62 miles, the height generally considered the border between the atmosphere and space.

9. I sure would!
Matter of fact, my dream job would be to be a janitor or greenhous keeper in a space station ala Bruce Dern in Silent Running.

10. Yes, and I DO think about it. All the time. Dream of it.
Just a bit different from "wouldn't have to think twice."

11. I won't, but I'll encourage my son
I think his lifetime will see the start of regular space flight - and i don't want him to miss it.

12. In a heartbeat, if I didn't have kids.
Mrs R. wouldn't let me. She even told me that if I'm in a perfectly good airplane, I have to stay inside it until it lands, instead of jumping out of it with a parachute.

Sigh...

15. I've been entering codes
off of Sunkist and A&W Root Beer boxes to win a trip to space. Haven't won yet, but I think it would be cool to go. Although I would be a little apprehensive about going on the maiden journey. Especially if I hear a lot of reassurance about how safe it is. :)

16. I would go on the shuttle but not a private enterprise (for profit) flight
I went so far as to send off for and fill out an application for astronaut with NASA in 1983. But then I didn't mail it in when I realized that it probably would mean no going back to the simple life of a small animal veterinarian in private practice. I didn't want to go down the road of mission specialist/scientist/academia/industry because there would be no turning back easily or at all.

So Sally Ride got to be the first woman, not me, LOL.

17. Most definitely.
Especially if I could go there to stay. Just getting away from Dubya and all his cronies would make it worth it. Hell, if NASA were to look for volunteers for a "let us blast you off into outer space never to return just to see what's out there" program, I'd sign up (though unfortunately they're not quite at that point yet). If I got to meet some aliens in the process, so much the better. Unless of course the aliens I met were fundie Repugs in which case NASA had better have an escape plan. Otherwise it would just suck too much and the whole trip would have been a waste. ;)

18. It sounds like you've thought this out
;)

The fundie repug aliens would be a fate worse than 'War of the Worlds' and I don't think lowly germs would take them out as easily as they did in the movie.
