Texas has higher-than-average rates of children living in poverty and without health insurance, ranking near the bottom in a nationwide study of children's well-being released Wednesday.

Nearly one in four children statewide live in poverty: $16,000 a year for a family of three. One in five kids has no health coverage. And about one in five 2-year-olds is not immunized, according to the KIDS COUNT Data Book by the Baltimore-based Annie E. Casey Foundation.

In addition, Texas' infant mortality rate increased 12 percent between 2000 and 2002, the latest data available. In 2002, there were 6.4 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Hospitals and clinics in Dallas report seeing an increased number of poor families needing services. "It's not a pretty picture, and it's getting worse," said Larry James, chief executive officer of Central Dallas Ministries, which provides medical and dental care to children.
