Eyes of Texas are on Rove & lobbyist

Karl Rove has earned himself some gossip payback.

President Bush's deputy chief of staff and foremost fishwife is fending off whispers about his friendship with lobbyist Karen Johnson.

"Their friendship reportedly deepened after Bush appointed Johnson - a little-known spokesperson for the Texas Good Roads Association - to a seat on his Transportation Department transition team in 2000," Radaronline.com reports. "The plum appointment enabled Johnson's lobbying firm, Infrastructure Solutions, to snare such high-paying clients as Aetna and the City of Laredo."

Johnson now travels frequently between Washington, D.C., and Austin, where she often appears at Rove's side at parties, according to Radar.

"Although there is no evidence that their relationship is anything but professional, the close association between the married White House aide and the comely lobbyist has long raised eyebrows in conservative Texas circles," the mag reports.

One Longhorn journalist says, "I've heard the stories, but I would never write about Karl and Karen. If you want to keep your job as a reporter in Texas, you make believe you don't see them together."

I've always found that the politically-related "scoops" in the NYDN seem to come directly from Rove or those associated with him. The fact that they're printing something like this indicates to me that Rove wants it printed.

"Karen" is a 40-year lobbyist/GOP loyalist who has never been married? And then the pro-Bush New York Daily News puts her "alleged relationship" with Karl?

No facial hair on Karen, yet she seems so...hirsute.

IIRC, the scenario was this:

Wilson granted an interview to Gannon, and Gannon surprised him by mentioning a confidential memo that stated that Wilson was sent on his trip to Niger by his wife. Persumably that was Powell's state deparmtent memo that was being perused by Fleischer and others on AF1 on Bush's flight to Africa. Gannon was later reported as being one of the journalists that Fitzgerald called to testify.

Either Karl Rove is doing this himself as a way to take the focus off the real matter at hand or some people are finally getting to talk since he's not very powerful right now. According to the article the journalist mentioned said they don't write about them because they don't want to lose their job. Seems to me they're getting some revenge possibly on Karl.

The timing of the release of this "story" is suspicious. You try to run with this, it will prove totally false, and then it will elevate Rove in the eyes of those who need for him to prevail.

I first saw this on Kos and I'm really disappointed in him for printing something which is obviously intended to distract. "Oooh, look, something shiny."

Plant false evidence, then when your attackers seize on it, use it to discredit them. So Rove may be planting flattering stories about himself (flattering being the possibility that any woman might actually want him - highly unlikely) which he can then later discredit and attempt to leverage that into discrediting all his accuser?

I don't think so. He's in too deep. The wheels are in motion and there's no stopping them.

I'm not sure if it was in this story or another one that was posted, there was the comment from a Texas reporter (on deep, deep, double, triple secret probation under the cone of silence) that Karl and the Mrs. don't quite rock 'n roll no more since she doesn't like his political views or bedside manner.

It's just be wonderful kharma if all these wingnut goons ended up surrounded by liberal and progressive children and grandchildren.

I've never seen a Mrs. Karl Rove at any events he's at. I remember watching Nancy Pelsoi's daughters documentary on the DNC primaries and she goes to the White House BBQ and she goes over to say hello to Karl and he gets out of a car and no Mrs. or son with him. I always thought that was strange since Bush and his group play the "faith" card a lot.
