"Bush Meeting House GOP Before CAFTA Vote"
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush is rallying Republicans on Capitol Hill behind a free trade agreement with Central America before the measure comes up for what is expected to be a very close vote.

Bush, who has invested considerable time and effort to winning passage of the Central American Free Trade Agreement, is speaking to a closed meeting of House Republicans on Wednesday morning, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

McClellan said Bush will also address other issues likely to come up this week in Congress, including major energy and highway legislation.

Closing party ranks on CAFTA could be crucial if the trade deal that the administration signed a year ago with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic is to survive.

1. Is he going to do lap dances for them to get them all to sign-up
and risk losing their constituency?

CAFTA is NOT popular in either party's constituency right now.. not with all the (good paying) jobs going overseas.

2. Anybody listen to Washington Journal this AM? Not ONE call
was in favor of passing CAFTA! They had both a Dem & a Pub rep on, and it didn't matter. NO CALLERS want it!

There were several who asked "Eince every poll indicates that 90%+ of the American people don't want CAFTA, how can Shrub justify pushing for it?

4. Maybe, but the guests on WJ this AM were just the opposite.
The Dem from South Tx was supporting CAFTA and the Pub Va (I think) was against it!

EVERY CALLER chewed out the Dem!

5. Did you see that idiot from the Chamber of Commerce?
Kept saying how all these industries were for it but was clearly talking about and for the CEOs, not the workers. What a mealy-mouthed slime he was.
