A soldier friend sent me this email.
He is a friend of my nephews, they are in the same unit. I don't want to come down too hard on him, but this is the biggest piece of BS I have read in quite some time. Should I fashion a response to him? He and my nephew spent a couple of weekend leaves at my place here in Manhattan, so he knows how I feel about this war. He and my nephew are of the "mindset" that they want to finish the job in Iraq. They are being redeployed in September and it will be my nephews second tour of duty in Iraq. Should I just ignore this?

This is not very long, but very informative. You have to read the catalogue of events in this brief piece. Then, ask yourself how anyone can take the position that all we have to do is bring our troops home from Iraq, sit back, reset the snooze alarm, go back to sleep, and no one will ever bother us again. In case you missed it, World War III began in November 1979... That alarm has been ringing for years.

US Navy Captain Ouimette is the Executive Officer at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. Here is a copy of the speech he gave last month. It is an accurate account of why we are in so much trouble today and why this action is so necessary.

AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP!

That's what we think we heard on the 11th of September 2001 (When more than 3,000 Americans were killed -AD) and maybe it was, but I think it should have been "Get Out of Bed!" In fact, I think the alarm clock has been buzzing since 1979 and we have continued to hit the snooze button and roll over for a few more minutes of peaceful sleep since then.

It was a cool fall day in November 1979 in a country going through a religious and political upheaval when a group of Iranian students attacked and seized the American Embassy in Tehran. This seizure was an outright attack on American soil; it was an attack that held the world's most powerful country hostage and paralyzed a Presidency. The attack on this sovereign U. S. embassy set the stage for events to follow for the next 25 years.

America was still reeling from the aftermath of the Vietnam experience and had a serious threat from the Soviet Union when then, President Carter, had to do something. He chose to conduct a clandestine raid in the desert. The ill-fated mission ended in ruin, but stood as a symbol of America's inability to deal with terrorism.

America's military had been decimated and down sized/right sized since the end of the Vietnam War. A poorly trained, poorly equipped and poorly organized military was called on to execute a complex mission that was doomed from the start.

Shortly after the Tehran experience, Americans began to be kidnapped and killed throughout the Middle East. America could do little to protect her citizens living and working abroad. The attacks against US soil continued.

In April of 1983 a large vehicle packed with high explosives was driven into the US Embassy compound in Beirut When it explodes, it kills 63 people. The alarm went off again and America hit the Snooze Button once more.

Then just six short months later in 1983 a large truck heavily laden down with over 2500 pounds of TNT smashed through the main gate of the US Marine Corps headquarters in Beirut and 241 US servicemen are killed. America mourns her dead and hit the Snooze Button once more.

Two months later in December 1983, another truck loaded with explosives is driven into the US Embassy in Kuwait, and America continues her slumber.

The following year, in September 1984, another van was driven into the gate of the US Embassy in Beirut and America slept.

Soon the terrorism spreads to Europe. In April 1985 a bomb explodes in a restaurant frequented by US soldiers in Madrid.

Then in August 1985 a Volkswagen loaded with explosives is driven into the main gate of the US Air Force Base at Rhein-Main, 22 are killed and the snooze alarm is buzzing louder and louder as US interests are continually attacked.

Fifty-nine days later in 1985 a cruise ship, the Achille Lauro is hijacked and we watched as an American in a wheelchair is singled out of the passenger list and executed.

The terrorists then shift their tactics to bombing civilian airliners when they bomb TWA Flight 840 in April of
1986 that killed 4 and the most tragic bombing, Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988, killing 259.

Clinton treated these terrorist acts as crimes; in fact we are still trying to bring these people to trial. These are acts of war.

The wake up alarm is getting louder and louder.

The terrorists decide to bring the fight to America. In January 1993, two CIA agents are shot and killed as they enter CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

The following month, February 1993, a group of terrorists are arrested after a rented van packed with explosives is driven into the underground parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City. Six people are killed and over 1000 are injured. Still this is a crime and not an act of war? The Snooze alarm is depressed again.

Then in November 1995 a car bomb explodes at a US military complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia killing seven service men and women.

A few months later in June of 1996, another truck bomb explodes only 35 yards from the US military compound in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. It destroys the Khobar Towers, a US Air Force barracks, killing 19 and injuring over 500. The terrorists are getting braver and smarter as they see that America does not respond decisively.

They move to coordinate their attacks in a simultaneous attack on two US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.. These attacks were planned with precision. They kill 224. America responds with cruise missile attacks and goes back to sleep.

The USS Cole was docked in the port of Aden, Yemen for refueling on 12 October 2000, when a small craft pulled along side the ship and exploded killing 17 US Navy Sailors. Attacking a US War Ship is an act of war, but we sent the FBI to investigate the crime and went back to sleep.

And of course you know the events of 11 September 2001. Most Americans think this was the first attack against US soil or in America. How wrong they are. America has been under a constant attack since 1979 and we chose to hit the snooze alarm and roll over and go back to sleep.

In the news lately we have seen lots of finger pointing from every high official in government over what they knew and what they didn't know. But if you've read the papers and paid a little attention, I think you can see exactly what they knew. You don't have to be in the FBI or CIA or on the National Security Council to see the pattern that has been developing since 1979.

The President is right on when he says we are engaged in a war. I think we have been in a war for the past 25 years and it will continue until we as a people decide enough is enough. America needs to "Get out of Bed" and act decisively now. America has been changed forever. We have to be ready to pay the price and make the sacrifice to ensure our way of life continues. We cannot afford to keep hitting the snooze button again and again and roll over and go back to sleep.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Yamamoto said "... it seems all we have done is awakened a sleeping giant." This is the message, we need to disseminate to terrorists around the world.

Support Our Troops and support President Bush for having the courage, political or militarily, to address what so many who preceded him didn't have the backbone to do, both Democrat and Republican. This is not a political thing to be hashed over in an election year; this is an AMERICAN thing. This is about our Freedom and the Freedom of our children in years to come.

If you believe in this please forward it to as many people as you can especially to the young people and all those who dozed off in history class and who seem so quick to protest such a necessary military action. If you don't believe it, just delete it and go back to sleep.

taken by the USA that just might have 'started the war'. But it is impossible to get these people to acknowledge that the USA has not been saintly.

14. Iran Caused 9/11? Made Us Invade Iraq?
And how many Iranians or Iraqis were on those planes? Do we need go round and round on this big lie again?

Next, how does the Iranian hostage incident in 1979 equate in invading Iraq (an enemy of Iran under Hussein) in 2003? Or, didn't Rummy get Saddam enough bio-tech weapons in the 80's???

As always, not only is 9/11 made into this big event, but emphasized...and simple to read between the lines that losing 3,000 American means we need to take out 30,000 or 300,000 of them. Yeah, that's the ticket...just make 'em even madder. Sure did the trick in Vietnam didn't it?

I don't blame to troops right now...many have been brainwashed into a culture that is starting to unravel under its own big lie. This regime is doing so much to undermine it's effectiveness, morale and ability to defend this country. This is yet another vain glorious attempt to legitimize this invasion and create either a plausible deniability or outright lie that enables those who have to do the dirty work to keep on going.

One day these men will realize how they had been lied to and abused. It won't be pretty when that day happens. Stand ready with a shoulder...and not to be judgemental. We're going to have our hands full in the future with a lot of PTSD and other physical and mental illnesses this regime and invasion have created. Don't burn a bridge now that will be a valuable one...for you and them, later.

Peace...

23. Thank You...I've Had Contact With Various Iraqi Vets...
You meet two different worlds. When the "light is on"...when they're in public or where they have to be "soldier", you hear the rhetoric like what your letter shows. What else can they say? Many who have returned and still have friends over there feel a sense of guilt that if they really say their true feelings, they could be betraying those buddies. So please don't be judgemental at this point. You could be seeing the outside, not the inside.

Recently, I've made the acquaintance of an Iraqi vet who ran afoul of the locals by not wanting to waive flags and play politics with his service. He just wanted to go back to his life, that was disrupted, not by choice, when his unit was called up in 2003 (he was called back and told it'd only be 6 months...nearly 2 years later and he's expecting he may have to go back again later this year. He's not happy with his situation...but he has to keep it to himself. I really wish I could do more to help him.

This invasion will go down as the dirtiest and most sorrid moment in our history. I don't want to see those who were used as pawns be the targets of the blame while their big money, profiteering puppetmasters in Washington and the corporate boardrooms walk away with their riches and power.

Peace...

15. I was gonna just ignore this, but . . .
So the mysterious "Captain Ouimette" in a speech he allegedly gave "last month" somewhere thinks the U.S. has been under attack since 1979, and only now do we have a leader with the grit and the courage to face reality.

Uh huh. Well, "Captain," here's an event that YOU might be interested in:

In 1953, the United States forcibly restored Mohammed Reza Pahlavi as the Shah of Iran. For the next quarter century, the Shah ruled Iran with an iron fist, terrorizing the population through his secret police force, the dreaded SAVAK. The Shah proved to be a dependable thug for several presidents, providing the invaluable "bulwark against Communism" in Iran while ensuring a steady flow of oil to the West. Hard to believe, "Captain," but the people of Iran didn't appreciate being oppressed and robbed of their country's wealth.

So it should come as no surprise that in 1979, when they had the chance to unburden themselves, the Iranian people were a little miffed at us. Wake up, "Captain," and learn some history.

As for the rest of your despicable screed, you're in the company of the know-nothing branch of the extreme right wing, who can't descry anything wrong with the United States' history of oppression and exploitation of countries and populations all over the world. Like the Michael Douglas character in the movie "Falling Down," you can't fathom how it is that you have become the bad guy.

Is the history of the United States an unending parade of oppression? No, it is not. The United States has achieved great good, and has shared generously from time to time of the bounty of our nation and its people. But we're by no means the only country that has done this, and other countries have done far, far better than we have.

To think that history started in 1979 shows a breathtaking lack of understanding of world events, and I'm surprised that someone in the U.S. military could achieve a commissioned rank with such a closed mindset. In short, you're a jingoistic immature person, like the schoolyard bully who carefully and lovingly catalogs and remembers every slight, every wrong, every injury done to him, real and imagined, and who totally elides anything he might have done to generate such hostility.

Grow up, "Captain."

You know...

"Comrade Ogilvie, who had never existed in the present, now existed in the past, and when once the act of forgery was forgotten, he would exist just as authentically, and upon the same evidence, as Charlemagne or Julius Caesar."

From 1984, George Orwell

Smells like astroturf to me. Typical heavy-handed propaganda.

26. So I googled "captain ouimette"
And as I suspected, the good captain sure likes giving his little speech. Whether he's at the "Navel" Air Station or just the NAS, whether he goes by "Daniel" or just plain "Dan," he's apparently given his little history lesson on June 20, 1994 or at the Pensacola Civitan Club on February 19, 2003. He may now be a Commander, he might have served on the USS Intrepid or on the USS Constellation.

He's apparently a really busy guy.

I'm sure other DUers with a faster hook-up will be able to uncover a little more about Danny boy.

Notice how the only president mentioned as being responsible, and that was for stuff that happened in the Reagan and Bush presidencies? It's not America that needs the history lesson, it's Captain Ouimette.

And if Clinton treated them like criminals instead of enemy soldiers, what does that mean for Reagan and Bush, who pretended they didn't exist at all?

28. There is one problem with it
It stops at September 11th 2001. It needs to add the tens of thousands of deaths since georgie took "control". It needs to talk about the rise of terrorism since then and the continuing threat of these acts. It needs to show all of the examples that asshole's "war" has done nothing to stop what that whole bullshit "letter" is about.
Yes, it is time America wakes up and realizes that they have been screwed in the ass by an administration that could give a shit about the same people who are passing these types of emails around. A lot has happened since September 11th, 2001 and I think for this to be complete, the other information should be added and sent along with this.
